Owls Battle, Fall in OT

Box Score

PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (1-8) saw a late lead slip away and eventually fell to the University of New Brunswick – St. John Seawolves (2-5) in overtime on Sunday afternoon.  The UNBSJ team would go away with a 50-41 victory.

Defense was the theme of the day in the matchup, as both teams struggled to put up points.  Once again neither team was able to step up early, with the first quarter ending in a 4-4 draw.  The second quarter would start in favor of the Seawolves as they would go on an 8-0 run in the first three minutes to take command of the game.  UMPI would step up defensively, preventing their guests from scoring for the rest of the half, and allowing them to go on a 13-0 run.  The Owls would enjoy a 17-12 lead at the half.

UNB St. John would cut into that lead in the third quarter, taking the lead twice.  UMPI would lead by just one going into the fourth, when the Seawolves would make a charge to take a five-point lead.  UMPI would fight back.  A Jessy Dickison (SR, Houlton, ME) put back would pull them within two, and a quick stop and layup by Marissa Reagle (FR, Seattle, WA) would tie the game at 33.  With just over a minute remaining, a technical foul on the Seawolves' bench would get the Owls the lead as Rhylee Wright (SO, Frenchville, ME) would sink both free throws.  The Owls would fail to convert on the following possession however, setting UNBSJ with one final attempt to win the game in regulation.  They would get a wide open look for three, but the shot would fall short, sending the game to overtime.

The Seawolves would get two field goals in the first minute, but the Owls would hang in, and with 2:49 remaining, Dickison would convert on a layup to pull UMPI to within three.  The home team would go cold from there, allowing the Seawolves to go on a 9-3 run to end the game.  The Owls would fall by a final score of 50-41.

The Owls were plagued by turnovers, and racked up 52 of them in the matchup, while UNBSJ would turn it over 37 times.  Neither team would shoot well in the game, as the Owls would convert just 28% of their attempts, while the Seawolves would connect on 24.7%.

Wright would lead the Owls with 15 points and 11 rebounds.  Dickison would add eight points.  Kathryn Magee (JR, Saint John, NB) would lead the Seawolves with 15 points off the bench, while Kelsey Simon (JR, Fredricton, NB) would add ten points and six rebounds.

The Owls are on the road on Tuesday.  The will travel to Vermont Tech for a 1 pm tip off.
