Box Score Maine-Presque Isle began Thursday night's game flat, and talented Maine-Machias took advantage, building a huge halftime lead and hanging on for the 74-68 win Thursday night in Presque Isle.
The Clippers took advantage of the sluggish Owls to build an immediate 18-4 advantage. Maine-Presque Isle slowed the momentum somewhat with some spark from junior Derek Healy on both ends of the floor. Freshman Maurice Harris, on his way to a game-high nine rebounds, also helped to keep the game within distant striking distance.
Maine-Presque Isle appeared more energized in the second half, but Maine-Machias continued to make plays to maintain their advantage; however, at the seven-minute mark of the second half the Owls went on a furious run behind Healy and freshman Kevin Collins, as well as the passing and defense of junior Chase Vicaire.
Having finally cut the deficit to single digits with just over three minutes to play, the Owls used steals from Healy and Collins, as well as scores by each, to cut the lead to four with two minutes to play. After trading one free throw for a basket, the Owls were within three with 40 seconds and elected to foul.
The Clipper's Antwan Ruise connected on one and then missed, but Maine-Machias was able to grab the offensive rebound to essentially dash the comeback hopes.
Maine-Presque Isle, originally slated to play Fisher College in Boston Saturday, is re-scheduling the game due to weather and will next face Eastern Maine in Bangor Monday at 7:30 p.m.
