UMPI Softball Drops Pair in Season Opener

(ORONO, ME) – Leah Jackson's three-run, walk-off blast punctuated Maine Maritime's softball sweep of the University of Maine-Presque Isle at the U Maine Dome. Her third shot of the day, and second in the nightcap, made it 11-2 ending the game via mercy rule. It was the second mercy-rule shortened game of the afternoon. The Mariners (2-0) knocked off the Owls (0-2) 8-0 in the opener.

Jackson went 3-for-5 with two walks and six runs batted in over the course of the afternoon.  

The Mariners' Autumn Jones took the decision in the nightcap working three innings. She allowed two runs, one earned on one hit. Erica Taylor started both games, working a total of seven scoreless innings. She struck out four and allowed three hits in her shutout opener.

Lainey Herring (Jr./Houlton, ME) was saddled with the loss in the first game. She surrendered eight runs, but only three were earned. She struck out five and walked as many. Courtney Bishop (Fr./Saco, ME) took the loss in the second allowing 11 runs on nine hits.

Desiree Smith (Sr/Thomaston, ME) went 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Owls.

UMPI will play Thomas College in a doubleheader tomorrow, Saturday March 17th.  Games will also be played at the University of Maine Dome with first pitches at 7:30pm and 9:30pm.
