FREDERICKSBURG, VA
The UMPI Softball team got back to action for their second doubleheader of the year after a travel day to get down to Virginia. The Owls gave Mary Washington a run for their money in the first game, and were outmatched the whole second game, as the Eagles took both games.
Game 1: 13-5 Eagles
UMPI came out swinging to start the game, making up for lost time in their opening doubleheader. The Owls plated three in the first on a two RBI single from Avery VonKadich. Mary Washington responded with two runs in the home half, yet UMPI answered back in the top of the 2nd. Gracelyn Walsh delivered a two RBI double, as part of a three hit day for her to put UMPI back up by three runs at 5-2. The Owls blanked the Eagles in the second, before being held off the board for the first time in the game in the 3rd. In the bottom of the third, things began to unravel for UMPI. Mary Washington scored four runs to take their first lead at 6-5. Mary Washington kept their foot on the gas the next two frames, scoring three times each, expanding it to a 12-5 game, while keeping UMPI scoreless over four straight innings entering the bottom of the 6th. Mary Washington plated one more in the home half, making it a run-rule victory, despite trailing by three runs after two innings.
Top Performers:
UMPI was led by the three hit day from Gracelyn Walsh. She had a pair of doubles as well as two RBI. Megan Bucholz and Keira Greene both went 2-3, while Avery VonKadich had a two RBI single in the first. The Owls had 10 hits as a squad, making it a much improved clip. Madison Boynton started the game in the circle and went 3-plus innings. Boynton was on the hook for six earned runs, while striking out one. Hailey Saylor came on in relief and went the rest of the way, tossing 2.2 innings with a strikeout as well.
Game 2: 12-0 Eagles
It was a damaging first inning the did the Owls in and put the Eagles up big early on. Mary Washington brought 10 hitters to the plate to score six times in the bottom of the 1st. Â They'd score one, three, and two over the next three innings, making it a relentless offensive attack in game two. The Owls couldn't string anything together on offense as the bats cooled off.
Top Performers:
Keira Greene and Abby Doughty were the only two base hits for UMPI in the five-inning affair. Gracelyn Walsh did the bulk of the pitching duties, going 3.2 innings and allowing two earned runs while fanning a solid five batters.
Up Next:
The Owls will have a quick turnaround beginning the Fastpitch Dreams Classic on Monday morning at 9am as they'll try to get in the win-column for the first time in 2026. They will have Mount Aloysius College first, and then Principia College at 1pm.
