Hot Shooting Helps Highlanders

Box Score

PRESQUE ISLE, ME 1/5/12 --    The University of Maine-Presque Isle men's basketball team ran into a buzzsaw on Thursday night in the form of Houghton (NY) College.  The visiting Highlanders shot 51% from the floor, 58% from 3-point range, and 70% from the free throw line en route to a 73-49 victory.

After trailing by 10 at halftime, 33-23, the Owls (2-7) were able to hang around early in the second half before a 15-4 run by Houghton (7-6) put them up by 20 (65-45) with just over 6 minutes remaining.  Up to that point, UMPI had managed to stay in the game thanks in part to great free throw shooting hitting 19-of-21 for the game.  Kyle Corrigan (Jr./Caribou, ME) was 8-8 at the charity stripe on his way to a team leading 10 points on the night.

But it was the shooting from the floor that ultimately did the home team in.  UMPI shot 26% in both halves to finish 13-49.

Houghton had a balanced scoring attack putting four players in double figures, led by Matt Ball's 13.

The UMPI men will now head out on a 7-day, two-game tour of the northeast United States.  First up will be a battle at SUNY-Canton on Monday, January 9th.  Gametime is set for 2:00pm.
