Leo Saucier

In2013, Leo Saucier enters his 9th year as the head coach of UMPI'sbaseball team; he returned in '08 after three years away fromcoaching.  He was the pitching coach for the '01 squad andHead Baseball coach for three seasons from '02 to '04.  In2009 he led the team to their most successful season ever and to arecord most wins in a single season (14).   The teamalso competed in  their first post-season tournament; theyfinished 13-7 in the Sunrise Conference and second in theconference playoffs.  The Owls again finished in second placein the Sunrise Conference in 2010.  With his recrutingefforts, Coach Saucier has increased the roster to 28, whichincludes several out of state student-athletes.  

Coach Saucier played NCAA Div II baseball for SlipperyRock University (Penn.) in '81 & '82 but ashoulder injury ended his college pitching career prior to hisjunior season.  He finished college early by graduating MagnaCum Laude from SRU in December of  '83 with a Bachelor ofScience Degree in Health & Physical Education.

Aftercollege he entered the U.S. Navy and served four years as a medicalcorpsman.  He worked intensive care in Naval Hospitals andspent his last two years with the 2nd Marines,2nd Battalion; a U. S. Marine Corps infantryunit.  His advanced training as an EMT and battlefield medicsupported his infantry unit in combat training.  He began workon his Master's Degree at Old DominionUniversity (Norfolk, Va.) while stationed atPortsmouth Naval Hospital in Virginia.


After receiving his honorable discharge in '88 coach Saucierentered Valdosta StateUniversity in Valdosta, Georgia where hecompleted his Master of Education Degree in Physical Education(1992). While at Valdosta State, he was a graduate assistant in thehuman performance lab and a volunteer assistant with VSU's baseballteam. He worked with and learned from the legendary baseball coachTommy Thomas; the all time NCAA Div. II leader in wins for a coach(1,234).  

Coach Saucier taught middle school Science and Physical Educationin Georgia from '91 - '96 and also coached high school baseball andfootball, middle school football and track & field.  Atthe same time he was an adjunct instructor for Valdosta State'sphysical education department, teaching undergraduate courses atnight.

He was hired full time at Valdosta State University in the summerof '96; he was the physical education department activitycoordinator, a student teaching supervisor, and an instructor ofphysical education.  He left Valdosta State for the University of NewMexico in '99 to pursue a doctorate in physicaleducation (curriculum & instruction).  After completing asuccessful year at UNM as a teaching assistant he decided to followhis desire to coach college baseball.

A native of Millinocket (Stearns H.S., 1980) coach Saucierreturned to Maine in 2000 to take a one year teaching position atthe University of Maine at Presque Isle (he remains a full-timefaculty member in the College of  Education) and assist withcoaching the baseball team.  By the following year he washired as the head coach;  "I am so happy to be back coaching,but first and foremost I am a teacher.  The most important jobI have is to help train successful teachers of physicaleducation."

Coach Saucier is married and lives in Easton with his wifeVicki.
