Presque Isle, ME - Four Teams came together on Saturday to compete at the University of Maine at Presque Isle which included North Atlantic Conference games between UMPI and NVU-Johnson, UMPI and NVU-Lyndon, and non-conference games between UMFK and both Vermont Colleges.
Northern Vermont-Johnson (11-9, NAC 3-0) won the opening Match vs. the Host UMPI Owls (6-13, NAC 0-1) in 3 straight sets 25 to 23, 25 to 18 and 25 to 20.
Set 1 (25-23 NVU-Johnson): The Badgers and Owls battled back and forth in an exciting 1st Set of the opening game of the day with the lead changing hands several times down the stretch before NVU-Johnson pulled out a 25 to 23 win. UMPI held the largest lead of the Set by a 19 to 16 marginbefore the visitors tied the Set at 22 to 22. The Badgers went up 23 to 22 with UMPI tying up the score again at 23 apiece on a touch point by Miranda Washinawatok (Jr. Shawano, WI).
Set 2 (25-18 NVU-Johnson ): ME-Presque Isle fell behind early 7 to 1 and 12 to 5 before pulling to within 2 points and trailing just 14 to 12 midway through the contest. Northern Vermont-Johnson then went on a 6 to 0 run to gain the advantage 20 to 12. The Owls would score 4 quick points of their own to close the gap to 20 to 16 before the Badgers went on to win Set #2 25 to 18.
Set 3 (25-20 NVU-Johnson): NVU-Johnson and the Owls once again traded leads multiple times in the 3rd Set and with the Badgers ahead 20 to 19 after a Maddie Tweatt (Jr. Middleton, ID) kill, NVU then reeled off 4 straight points to take a late 24 to 20 lead.
Match Summary: Mason Lores had 30 assists and 5 digs for the Badgers while Nikola Kanapova recorded 14 digs and 9 kills. Miranda Washinawatok paced UMPI with 10 kills, 3 service aces and 10 digs. Ashlon Stroub (Jr. Baakersfield, CA) recorded a team high 13 digs while Kelly Hailey (Fr. Wells, ME) added 8 assists.
