Owls Shine in Corsairs Classic

The University of Maine at Presque Isle women showed more strength with seven of their 10 athletes participating in the Corsairs Classic at U-Mass Dartmouth on Saturday.  Southern New Hampshire University was the meet winner in this 25 team field having scored 136.5 points, 28 better than second place Eastern Connecticut State University (108.5).  The top five positions were rounded out by Springfield College (107.5), Westfield State University (96.5), and Bridgewater State University (77). 

In this very competitive field the Owls were looking to improve school records and personal marks or, in the case of first time collegiate athletes, to establish benchmarks to work from.  A few records were set on both counts.  Irina Norkin (Denmark, ME) improved on her 1500m school record in running 5:46.31. Her 2:57.49 for the 800m bested the previous school mark held by Chenoa Jackson of Wilton, ME.  Jackson, now in her senior year, ran here first races in her final season for the Owls.  She clocked 6:35.43 in her 1500m run and 3:17.94 for the 800m.  Liz Ward (Winthrop, ME) lowered here 100m school mark to 16.37 and improved here own best distance in the discus to 18.99m/62-09.  Laura Fitzgerald (Springvale, ME) lowered the UMPI 200m mark to 41.92.

Rebecca Griffin (Hodgdon, ME): 800m – 3:34.93

Ashley Morton (Presque Isle, ME): 800m - 3:26.67

Laura Fitzgerald (Springvale, ME):  100m – 19.46; 200m – 41.92 (*school record)


The Owls next travel to two meets to be held at Regis College in Weston, MA on Friday and at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME on Saturday.
