Bangor, ME – The UMPI Owls women's basketball team traveled to Bangor to play the host Husson University in their first North Atlantic Conference game of the year. The Owls would finish the night with their first loss of the year, losing to the preseason number one seed 88-54.
The Owls were unable to stop the Eagles early as they started the game on an 18-2 run to push the lead up early. With the first half ending with the Eagles leading 27-8, picked up their intensity with a promising second quarter, led by the aggressive play of Alexis Ireland (Howland, ME). Ireland finished the second quarter 1-1 from the field but was able to get to the free throw line, shooting 5-6 just in the second.
The Owls came out, as they have all year, with a big third quarter winning those ten minutes 15-9 with their defensive intensity, causing the Eagles to shoot only 25% from the field in the third quarter. With the Owls down 15 still, the fourth quarter was all Eagles as they bounced back off and shot 80% in the final ten minutes of the game.
Ireland led all scorers with 21 points shooting 5-7 from the field and getting to the line 13 times and making 11 of them, also recording nine rebounds and two steals to round out her stat line.
The Owls will look to bounce back against the Eagles as they host the NAC opponent on Wednesday December 8 at 5:30PM.
