Farmington, ME – The Owls sweep the GNAC! The women's basketball team edges past Rivier College in a tight contest to give them the weekend sweep over the GNAC schools. The Owls edged the win by two points, 74-72 after two clutch late game free throws by Hunter Mercier (Fairfield, ME) with one second left.
A tight first half with some back and forth play by led to a tie game at the end of the first quarter and the Raiders up two points going into the half. Another tight third quarter gave the Raiders a four point lead going into the fourth quarter. Early in the fourth the Owls continued to bring the game within one or a tie, just before the Raiders extended their lead once more.
With three minutes left into the game, the Owls found themselves down by six points. The Owls would go on an 8-3 run, led by Mercier's two threes, to tie the game with 2:14 on the clock. A little more back and forth play led to the Owls down two points with 30 seconds remaining. Alexis Ireland (Howland, ME) hit a free throw to bring the lead to one. The Owls were then able to cause a Raiders' turnover to give the possession back to the Owls, where Ireland hit an and-one lay up to give the Owls a two point lead with just 19 seconds left. Some late game free throws by both teams, followed by a clutch three by the Raiders brought the game to 72-72 with just two seconds left. It was Mercier who would draw a foul to get to the free throw line and hit two clutch free throws to finally put the game away.
Mercier led the Owls with 19 points off 7-13 shooting and 3-8 from the three and eight rebounds. Ireland finished with her third double-double in three games, finishing with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Including 10-14 from the free throw line. Emily Wheaton (Presque Isle, ME) finished with 12 points.
