Castine, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls women's basketball team traveled to Castine, Maine to play Maine Maritime Academy. The Mariners took control early in the first quarter, despite the Owls defensive efforts the remainder of the game, MMA took the win 71-54.
The Mariners took an early lead coming out of the gate with a 10-0 run. The Owls brought the lead back down to six points after a short run. MMA extended the lead on a 8-0 run to end the first quarter. The Owls picked up the defense in the second quarter causing nine turnovers and holding the Mariners to only 17% shooting in the 10-minute quarter. UMPI's second quarter brought them within seven points, 34-27 going into the half.
The Mariners took back control of the game in the third quarter, extending their lead and holding the Owls to nine points in the quarter. The Owls were unable to complete a comeback despite an 18-point fourth quarter.
Emily Wheaton (Presque Isle, ME) led all scorers with 23 points coming off of 5-14 shooting from the field, including three made three's and an impressive 10-13 shooting from the free throw line. First year player Lexi Ireland (Howland, ME) finished with nine points and four rebounds. While Sarah Musselman (Turlock, CA) led the Owls in rebounding with nine, to go along with her four points.
