Presque isle, ME – UMPI Women's Basketball Coach Gavin Kane is very pleased to announce that three more Aroostook County student-athletes will be staying close to home to pursue their college academics and basketball careers at The University of Maine at Presque Isle.
Riley Clough, Amber Sherwood and Cammi King-Demerchant are all teammates at Ft. Fairfield High School and recently completed their senior basketball season after winning their Tournament Prelim game before falling in a close battle in the Northern Maine Class C Quarterfinals to eventual State Champion Central Aroostook High School.
Riley Clough, a 6'2" center, was the first to commit to UMPI before teammates Sherwood and King-Demerchant verbally committed in the past couple of weeks. "Riley has been a 4 year player for us who makes others around her better," said Ft. Fairfield Coach Larry Gardner. "She has been a tremendous teammate and is also very coachable. She has great potential for continued improvement and growth as a player and will be a great addition to the Owls program 2019-20 Season." Clough was a senior captain who helped lead her team to a 17-3 record and 2nd place finish in Class C. Riley averaged 5 points per game and shot 68% from the foul line.
"Amber was our most athletic player this season," said the Tigers Coach. "She has great leaping ability and a quick first step to the rim. An excellent free-throw shooter and rebounder, who can also step outside and knock down the three. Amber is a tireless worker who will continue to improve at the next level." Sherwood was also senior captain who helped lead her team to their impressive 17-3 record. She averaged 8.4 points per game while shooting at a 66% clip from the free throw line.
"Cammi has been a four year starter for us and a team captain the last two years. She is an outstanding 3-point shooter and has scored over 800 points in her High School career. She has been a consistent player for us on both ends of the floor," said Coach Gardner. King-Demerchant was a senior captain who averaged 7.5 points per game and was a 62% free throw shooter.
Clough will be majoring in Elementary Education with a minor in Psychology. King-Demerchant is majoring in Pre-Med while Sherwood will be studying in the field of Biology.
"One of my goals has been to really encourage athletes from the County to stay right here where they can get a tremendous college education. I am thrilled that Riley, Amber and Cammi will be attending UMPI and joining our Basketball Program," said Coach Gavin Kane. "I have seen all three of them play multiple times over the past 3 seasons and they will each bring their own strengths to our team. They have played in an outstanding program at Ft. Fairfield under Coach Gardner and I very much look forward to working with them. I am excited to work with Riley and continue to see her grow as a post player. Amber and Cammi both are athletic and can score from the perimeter as well as take it to the rim," stated Kane.
