Owls Scoring Droughts Lead to Loss vs. SUNY Canton

Presque Isle, ME -  The SUNY Canton Roos came in to Widen Hall Gymnasium and walked out with an important 53 to 40 North Atlantic Conference win over the UMPI Owls Friday night. The Roos (3-10, 2-3 NAC) gained an advantage over the Owls (5-8, 1-4 NAC) with the victory as NAC Teams will jostle the next four weeks for the six playoff positions available.

Neither Team scored early on until the Owls Hunter Mercier (Fr. Fairfiled, ME) drained a 3 pointer on an assist from Kendra Silvers at the 7:50 mark of the 1st Quarter. Silvers (So. North Berwick, ME) would hit a baseline jumper on a feed from Emmy Churchill for a 5 to 0 UMPI advantage. SUNY Canton would outscore the Owls 10 to 0 over the next 3 minutes before Mercier would strike again with her second 3 pointer. A Jasmine Gonzalez layup would wrap up the quarter with the visitors leading 14 to 8.

UMPI would continue to struggle offensively in the 2nd quarter but a Marissa Valdivia-Reagle (So. Seattle, WA) layup would bring the Owls to within four points 16 to 12. A Rhylee Wright (Jr. Frenchville, ME) layup and a free throw cut the SUNY lead to 18 to 15. Two Wright scores inside and a Sara Musselman (Fr. Turlock, CA) drive and score would send the Owls into halftime tied 21 to 21.

UMPI would not score for several minutes into the 3rd quarter as the Roos scored 12 unanswered points when Antanasia Chambers broke away for a fastbreak layup before the Owls Wright hit a short jumper to make it 33 to 23 SUNY Canton at the 4:47 mark. Kendra Silvers would hit a short jumper with 16 seconds left in the quarter to keep UMPI close, trailing 33 to 26 going into the final period.

SUNY Canton would open the 4th quater on a 14 to 4 run and the Owls were not able to close the gap in the final frame. An Autumn Watkins layup and a steal by Watkins and two quick layups by Sade Rogers set the tone for the Roos in the 4th quarter. UMPI would hurt themselves with a lack of aggressiveness on the offensive end and only shot 27.6% from the floor. The Owls would turn the ball over 19 times and SUNY would score 17 points off UMPI turnovers.

Antanasia Chambers led the Roos with 17 points and 8 rebounds while teammate Breanna Cullers scored 15. Watkins would grab 9 boards.

For the Owls, Rhylee Wright led the team with 12 points and a game-high 16 rebounds while Mercier finished with 9 points and 7 boards.
