Presque Isle, ME - The UMPI Owls were looking for a two game weekend sweep of UMF but the Beavers broke a 61 to 61 tie when freshman forward Molly Folsom of Lawrence High School scored as time ran out and the visitors from Farmington escaped with a 63 to 61 win.
UMPI (3-3, 1-1 NAC) built a solid lead in the opening half outscoring the Beavers (1-5, 1-1 NAC) 25 to 8 in the 2nd quarter, taking a 38 to 23 advantage going into the halftime break. Rhylee Wright (Jr. Frenchville, ME) came out hot, scoring 19 first half points, Marissa Reagle scored 8 points and Hunter Mercier added 6 in the first 20 minutes of play as the Owls built their cushion.
Me-Presque Isle went cold on offense in the 3rd quarter for the second day in a row and this time it proved to really hurt the Owls. UMF slowly cut into the UMPI lead and outscored the Owls 23 to 6 in the quarter as Beaver guard Haley Felkel hit two 3 pointers late and UMF surged ahead 46 to 44 lead going into the final frame.
The 4th quarter saw the lead swing several times with UMF looking like they might take control in the final minute. However, after a missed free throw UMPI called a timeout with 7.8 seconds remaining and down 2. Marissa Reagle (So. Seattle, WA) hit Kendra Silvers (Jr. North Berwick, ME) on a cut to the rim with Silvers making a great catch and controlling the ball to put it in off the backboard to knot the score at 61. UMF called a timeout with 5.7 seconds left in the game and fed the ball into Folsom in the low post for a game winning reverse layup as time expired.
For UMPI, Hunter Mercier (Fr. Fairfield, ME), scored 14 points including four 3 pointers, Wright netted 25 points and Reagle scored 11 for the Owls and added 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Folsom connected for a team high 16 points for Me-Farmington and pulled down 5 rebounds while McKenna Brodeur added 11 points and 6 boards.
