Biddeford, ME - The University of Maine at Presque Isle softball team made a valiant comeback in the 6th inning at UNE but fell just short in a 5 to 4 defeat in the first game of a doubleheader played in Biddeford.
The Owls (8-5) fell behind early when the Nor'easters (12-8) struck early in the bottom of the 1st inning when Alexis Kapsambelis layed down a bunt and raced to second on a throwing error while Avery Alberghini scored from 2nd base on the bunt and UMPI error. Sarah Lapachell rifled a ground rule double to left field scoring Kapsambelis and a quick 2 to 0 lead for the Home team.
UNE went ahead 3 to 0 in the 2nd inning when Andrea Gosper raced home on a RBI single to left by Alberghini. Gabby Harrison singled in 1 of 2 unearned runs for the Nor'easters in the bottom of the 3rd inning as UNE jumped aheasd 5 to 0 over Me-Presque Isle.
In the 6th inning the Owls mounted a comeback when Sarah Duncklee (Jr. Kearny, AZ) singled to centerfield scoring Jordan Hansen (Fr. Phillips, NE), with Jordi LeGassie (Sr. Presque Isle, ME) and Duncklee moving up a base each on a throwing error back into the infield. Mel Terry (So. Moreno, CA)then reached on an infield single scoring Legassie. Roni Shaw (So Payette, ID) singled to rightfield bringing in 2 UMPI runners and closing the score to 5 to 4. UNE would then get out of the inning and shutdown the Owls in the 7th inning to preserve the 1 run victory.
Brookelynn Garcia (So. Torrance, CA) went the distance on the mound for UMPI hurling 6 innings, giving up 5 runs (2 earned runs), allowing 7 hits while walking 1 and striking out 5. Kate Wilmot went 6 innings for UNE getting the win and Jordan Strum pitched a scoreless 7th for the save.
Biddeford, ME - Me-Presque Isle was hoping to gain a split of their doubleheader at UNE but the Nor'easters had much to say about it scoring in each of the first 5 innings including a 3-run 2nd inning, and a 3-run 5th inning, on their way to a sweep over UMPI by the score of 10 to 2.
UNE scored first when Avery Alberghini scored on a perfectly executed bunt by Meg Harvey and a 1 to 0 lead.
The Owls would grab a 2 to 1 lead in the 2nd inning when Delanie Strout (Jr. Greene, ME) layed down a bunt and Roni Shaw scored from 2nd base on an infield throwing error. Anaiz Diaz (So. Tampa, FL) would plate the go ahead run when she scored Strout with a sac fly.
The Nor'easters would get 3 runs in the 3rd inning on a sac fly by Anna Sessa, a RBI infield groundout by Kate Wilmot and a RBI single to right center by Diana Roher to go up 5 to 2 and then would go on to complete the 10 to 2 win.
Alie Martell got the win on the mound for UNE while Savannah Borland (Fr. Brownsville, TX) took the loss for the Owls.
Next up: UMPI will play a doubleheader tomorrow (Sunday) at Colby at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM.
