Packard reaches 500 K’s, Leads Owls to a Sweep

Bronx, NYSara Packard (St. Albans, ME) earns her 500th career strikeout as the senior pitcher leads the Owls to a sweep in the last double header of their long spring road trip.  UMPI wins big in both games vs. Lehman College; a 9-1 victory in the first game, followed by a 16-3 win in game two.

Packard would go into game one of the double header needing 13 K's to reach the 500 mark.  Ten strikeouts in game one put her at just three away to start the last game of the Owls road trip.  After two K's in the first; with one out in the bottom of the second, Packard left Lightning player Destiny Roldan looking as she earned her 500th strikeout, in just eight starts into her senior year.  Packard would end the day with two wins, 18 K's, while only allowing six hits and two runs in her eight innings pitched.

Game one was all Owls from the start.  Marissa Reagle (Seattle, WA) hit her first career homer in the first to give UMPI a 1-0 lead.  A throwing error by the Lightning would allow Brianna Losee (Pittsfield, ME) to bring the score to 2-0.

A big fourth inning by the Owls started with a two RBI single by Roni Shaw (Payette, ID).  Packard would single to center field to bring Shaw home to make the score 5-0.  Three walks in a row by the lightning allowed Packard to score. With the bases loaded Emily Page's double brought two more runs in. Reagle's single brought in the last run in for the Owls as they led 9-0.

Lehman would avoid a shut out in the bottom of the fourth off a fielder's choice, allowing Caitlin Vermon to advance home before the game was ended in five innings.

Game two started off with a Lightning score as Yaidee Nieves advanced home off a walk.  The Owls offense would come to life in the third; Delainie Strout (Greene, ME) doubled to left field bringing two runs in to give the Owls the lead.  Melanee Terry would follow with a two run homer, her third of the year.  Three Lightning errors followed giving the Owls three runs and a 7-1 lead in the third.

Another error in the fourth brought two Owls players home making the score 9-1.  Jackie Peers (Limestone, ME) and Alexis Allcock (Madison Heights, VA) both singled in the fifth to each bring in a run.  Alexis Levesque (Madawaska, ME) and Allcock both scored off another Lightning error.

Madison Exferd (Payette, ID) put an exclamation point on the game with her first career homerun in the fifth scoring three runs, making the game 16-1.  Three Lightning hits and an error by the Owls lead to two runs before the game ended.

The Owls return home before their two double headers next weekend vs. Pine Manor College at the Mahaney Dome in Orono.  Games are the 24th, 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM and the 25th, 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
