Owls Blanked in Opening Round of USCAA Tournament

AKRON, OH – The Owls of U Maine Presque Isle (25-13) faced off against The College of St. Joseph – Vermont (23-14) in the opening round of the USCAA National Tournament.  The Fighting Saints would shut out the Owls and take this one by a score of 2-0.

The Fighting Saints would jump out to a lead in the top of the first, when leadoff hitter Jacqueline Rossi (Albany, NY) would reach and steal second.  She would score on a two out RBI single by Sierra Jaeger (East Greenbush, NY), but UMPI would work out of trouble, stranding two in the opening frame.

Owls starting pitcher Sara Packard (SO, St. Albans, ME) would have to work out of trouble throughout the day, as St. Joseph would collect 5 hits in the first four innings, while UMPI would only collect two as they were trying to figure out Maggie Miller (Castleton, NY) who kept the Owls offensive attack off balance.  St. Joseph would threaten again in the fifth after a base hit and an error would put runners on first and second with no outs, but Packard and the Owls' defense were up to the task once again, and keep the deficit at one.

The offensive pressure for the Fighting Saints would finally pay off in the sixth.  Krysta Konderwich (Valatie, NY) would single to lead off the inning, and find herself at third when Jenna Crowley (Bennington, VT) would send a base hit to center to add an insurance run, putting the Owls down 2-0.  It looked as though CSJ would add to that lead in the seventh when they had a runner at third with one out.  Jaeger would rip a line drive, but third baseman Jordi Legassie (FR, Presque Isle, ME) would snag it as it headed down the baseline and step on the bag to double off the runner and end the threat.

The Owls offense was never able to gain any momentum.  Nicole Marucci's (SO, Naples, ME) single in the second and Dinah Bilodeau's (FR, Knox, ME) single in the third were the only baserunners to reach in the game.

With the loss, UMPI moves into the loser's bracket.  They will face Penn State Beaver at 6 PM tonight.
