Maine-Presque Isle continued their southern swing through Virginia Wednesday afternoon dropping two games to Sweet Briar College 8-3 and 7-1.
GAME ONE: Sweet Briar 8 UMPI 3
The Owls scored first with Carly Bell scoring an unearned run in the first inning. Down 5-1, the Owls plated two more runs with 2 out in the 5th when Shannon Brown singled, Dani Smith Doubled and Sara Packard got on base via a Vixen error. The rally ended as the next Owl struck out and the Blue & Gold were held hitless in their last two innings.
Packard went six inning, giving up 12 hits. Jessica Campbell added a hit for the Owls.
GAME TWO: Sweet Briar 7 UMPI 1
Errors in the field and on the base path would be the Owls major opponent in game two. Down 2-0 in the 3rd inning, the Owls scored their only run despite outhitting the Vixen 9-to-6 in the game. Jessica Campbell led off the inning with a double and Amanda Allen followed with a single. Freshman Nicole Marucci would knock in Campbell with an RBI single and the Owls were prepping for a big inning comeback.
That comeback would never materialize however as the next two Owl hitters recorded outs. The final blow to the big inning was landed after Shannon Brown singled, when Brown was called out for interference trying to advance to third on a single hit by Dani Smith.
The Owls would produce baserunners in each of the remaining innings, but would not be able to string anything together to cut into the Vixen lead and dropped the game 7-1.
Senior Whitney Brown toed the rubber for the Blue & Gold, giving up only 6 hits in her 6 innings of work. Smith and Marucci had 2 hits each. Carly Bell and shortstop Sara Packard added hits to the Owl attack.
