Softball Notches First Wins of the Season

(SOUTH PORTLAND, ME)  -- After going winless this week playing games in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Virginia, the University of Maine-Presque Isle softball team is now 2-0 in their home state.  The Owls took a doubleheader in impressive fashion over Southern Maine Community College, 13-3 and 13-2 on Friday afternoon.

Presque Isle is now 2-10 on the season.  The Seawolves fall to 3-14.

UMPI, who have yet to play a home game this season, still have a few road contests before finishing their weeklong spring break trip ends.  Saturday, the Owls will once again leave the Maine for a doubleheader at Pine Manor (MA) College.  Game times will be 11am and 1pm.  The games are rescheduled from a March 24th doubleheader that was postponed due to rain.

Game 1: OWLS 13, SMCC 3

Presque Isle came out dialed in at the plate in game one, scoring 8 times in the top of the first.  Jessica Campbell (Fr./Lisbon, ME) did what good lead off hitters do:  get on base and let your teammates bring you around to score.  Campbell reached base all four plate appearances (3 hits and a walk), and scored every time.

Together with 2-hole hitter Kellie Peers (Sr./Caswell, ME), the top of the order tandem combined to go 5-5 with 2 walks and 6 runs scored.

Krista Coffin (Jr./Presque Isle, ME) (1-6) earned her first win of the season pitching a complete game 6-hitter.  She walked 2 and struck out 4.

Game 2:  OWLS 12, SMCC 3

Another game, another "8-spot" for the Owls helped lead them to victory.  this time the big inning came in the 2nd.  After two frames, Presque Isle was up 11-0 and was able to coast to the 5-inning victory and sweep of the 'Wolves.

Ashley Laking (Fr./Topsfield, ME) was the offensive star for the Owls in game two.  In the best game of her young career, Laking went 2-2 with two doubles a career-high 3 RBI.  She reached base all three times she stepped to the dish.

As a team, the Owls put 20 runners on base (13 hits, 7 walks).  And once they got on, they did not stay in the same place for long.  Presque Isle stole four bases including two from Taylor Cochran (Fr./Topsfield, ME).

Megan Hannigan (Fr./Houlton, ME) contributed three hits to the Owls' effort, scoring once and driving in one.

Whitney Donovan (So./Ashland, ME) (1-0) took advantage of the run support to notch her first win of the season.  Donovan went the distance giving up 3 ER on 7 hits, walking two and striking out 2.
