Owls Sweep Doubleheader in First Home Games of the Season

(PRESQUE ISLE, ME) --  Neither rain, nor wind, nor falling temperatures can slow down the University of Maine-Presque Isle softball team right now.  The surging Owls won their sixth game in the last seven by taking a doubleheader from SUNY-Canton on Saturday, 8-2 and 14-12.  The Owls move to 2-0 at home this season.

UMPI is now 12-20 overall.  The two teams faced each other three times last Sunday to make up one game from a rainout last Saturday in Canton.  They will play three again tomorrow at Presque Isle High School to make up for the other rain out.

Game #1:  UMPI 8, Canton 2
Krista Coffin (So./Presque Isle, ME) kept the Roo batters on ice in game one.  UMPI's ERA leader threw a complete-game four-hitter, striking out  six and walking one to earn her 6th victory of the season.

The Owls scored all of the runs they would need in the bottom of the first. C Desiree Smith (Sr./Thomaston, ME) led off with a single.  The senior leader is now batting over .400 to lead the team.  After advancing to second on a sacrifice, Smith was on the move and scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Lainey Herring (Jr./Houlton, ME), who reached on the play.  Carolynn Tuck (Sr./Brewer, ME) followed with an RBI single.  Tuck then was brought home by a liner off the bat of Danielle Smith (Fr./Phillips, ME), giving UMPI a 3-0 lead.

Presque Isle added four runs in the third thanks to a Tuck RBI double and a bases clearing single from Kallie Pelletier (Jr./Madawaska, ME).'

Tuck finished a perfect 3-3 at the plate, scoring three and driving in 2.

Game #2:  UMPI 14, Canton 12
In a wild nightcap, the Owls built a big lead, lost it, and then scored four runs in the bottom of the 6th to sneak away with a 14-12 win.  Courtney Bishop (Fr./Saco, ME) entered the game in the fifth inning and gave up one earned run in the final 2.1 to pick up the win.

Up 7-1 after three innings and 9-4 after four, the Owls looked to be cruising to the sweep.  But the Roos came roaring back in the 5th, scoring 6 runs to take a 10-9 lead.  Canton used timely hitting while taking advantage of two UMPI errors, two walks, and a passed ball to send 12 hitters to the plate.

Presque Isle quickly tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when Herring singled in De. Smith.  Then in the 6th, the Owls scored four with the big blow being a 2-RBI double off the bat of Whitney Donovan (Fr./Ashland, ME).

Donovan struggled as the starting pitcher of the game only going three innings and giving up four runs.  However she more than made up for that performance at the plate.  With a bat in her hands, Donovan finished 3-3, 2 RBI, and 3 runs scored.
