(LYNN, MA) -- For the second day of the weekend, the University of Maine-Presque Isle women's softball team notched decisive victories over Fisher College and Vermont Technical College. VTC, who the Owls defeated 6-4 on Saturday, fell to the Owls on Sunday by a final of 14-0. UMPI then finished the Sunday sweep with a 12-3 win over host Fisher. With the victories, the Owls are now 6-15 on the season. They will take their 5-game winning streak to Farmington on Monday for a twinbill with the Beavers of UMaine-Farmington.
Game #1: UMPI 14, Vermont Tech 0 (5 innings)
Kallie Pelletier (Jr./Madawaska, ME) led a 17-hit UMPI attack with three hits and five RBI against the Knights. Pelletier's first 2 RBI capped off a 5-run first inning. After a quiet second inning for both teams, the Owls put the game away in the 3rd.
Presque Isle scored 6 runs in the third, the big blow coming off the bat of Lainey Herring (Jr./Houlton, ME). Coming to the plate with the bases loaded and one out, Herring drilled a triple to straight away centerfield, clearing the bases and putting the Owls up 10-0 at the time. Herring would come home to score one batter later on a Carolynn Tuck (Sr./Brewer, ME) RBI double to right.
That was more than enough support for UMPI hurler Krista Coffin (So./Presque Isle, ME) who picked up her 2nd win of the weekend. Coffin tossed a complete game 4-hit shutout for her 3rd win of the season. She struck out 3.
Herring finished the game 3-4 with 3 RBI and scored 2 runs. Seven UMPI starters had 2 or more hits.
Game #2: UMPI 12, Fisher 3 (6 innings)
Courtney Bishop (Fr./Saco, ME) pitched a complete game and gave up only one earned run to pick up her 2nd win of the weekend. She issued only 1 free pass while striking out 6. The Falcons fell to 0-29 for the season.
Leading 8-3, UMPI brought the game to a abrupt end with a 4-run sixth inning, bringing runs across in four different ways. For the first run, Pelletier hit a bases loaded RBI sac fly to the shortstop. Jennifer Ouellette (So./Van Buren, ME) followed with an RBI single to right. The Owls' third run came across on an RBI groundout off the bat of Desiree Smith (Sr./Thomaston, ME). Herring finished the scoring, reaching on an error which kept the inning alive and scored Jennifer Brown (Fr./Waldoboro, ME).
Kathleen Higgins (Sr./Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia) was the offensive star for Presque Isle knocking 2 hits in 3 at bats scoring twice and driving in 3. Higgins is now hitting .366 on the season.
