Presque Isle, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle is pleased to announce that Alessandro Marroquin of Weslaco High school, Weslaco Texas, has committed to attending the University in the fall of 2021. Alessandro comes from a strong program and has participated in many sports, including football. Marroquin specializes in the pole vault, an event in which he has realized continued success in the 2020-21 campaign, and he will also figure in relays and the long sprints for the Owls.
Marroquin expresses his decision to attend UMPI as stemming from a desire to make a difference in the Owls program and to experience a bit of a different environment, culture, and geographic area. "I have often thought of going to school outside of Texas and to experience virtually an entirely different part of the country", says Marroquin. "Presque Isle will certainly help me reach all my academic and athletic goals."
Weslaco Head Coach Gus Cabrera states that he has "had the pleasure of having Alessandro in our track program since his freshman year. He has been a perfect example of a student athlete. His attitude and work ethic is second to none, he has always been a respectful individual and hard worker. I believe Alessandro will be a great asset to your program".
On the academic side, Marroquin is a strong student-athlete who fits the NCAA Division 3 profile as well as the philosophy of Owls Athletics. Head Coach Chris Smith states that "Alessandro will add immensely to our program as we branch out into more diverse events within our track and field program. He has consistently finished in the top three in most of his high school pole vault competitions. He will be a strong student in his chosen major of Biology. I'm sure he will develop into a team leader and be a role model in future seasons, leading by example."
We in Owls Athletics welcome Alessandro to the UMPI community!
