Gorham, ME – Track and field athletes from The University of Maine at Presque Isle competed in their 2021 opener in split venues at the University of Southern Maine and St. Joseph's College on Saturday. USM hosted UMPI athletes in the triple jump in their field house and the discus event at a local school's facility. Paul Kaplan (Embden, ME) finished in second spot in the triple jump at 38'11.75" (11.88m), scoring eight points. His discus throw of 101'8" (30.98m) was strong enough for fourth place and four points. Steve Nader (Washburn, ME) finished in 12th position in his 100m event at 12.21 seconds. Zach Wood (Apopka, FL) was unable to compete due to injury.
On the women's side, Marge Dickinson (Brunswick, ME) set new school records in each of her two events. Her shot throw of 28'11.75" (8.83m) placed her in fifth spot, good for 2 points. Her discus throw placed her in eighth position (83'11"/25.58m). First year Marissa Havey (Surry, ME) set a personal best over her high school PR in the shot at 26'2.75" (7.99m) with the 4kg/8.8lb. collegiate implement. Her discus throw of 66'8" (20.32m) placed her in 12th position.
First year Samantha Morton (Chelmsford, MA) placed 15th in shot with a throw of 23'2.5" (7.07m) and 14th in discus at 63'10" (19.45m). In running events, Kendra Silvers (North Berwick, ME) and Kailee Sprague (North Berwick, ME) scored points for the Owls. Silvers scored two and four points in the 800m and 1500m, respectively. Her times were 2:57.94 (800m) and 5:59.33 (1500m). Sprague's six points came as a result of her third place finish in the 400m (1:37.40). Annaset Jackson (Wilton, ME) placed 11th in the 800m (3:21.89) and seventh in the 1500m (6:40.28). Elizabeth Bitar (Perry, ME), although hampered by injury, placed 12th in the 1500m at 6:46.36
Team scoring saw the men's meet won by the University of Maine at Farmington with 150 points. The women's meet was won by the University of Southern Maine with 170. The Owls teams each finished in sixth position with the men scoring 12 points and the women 14. Full results can be seen at Owls.umpi.edu.
