Presque Isle, ME – The Owls Men's basketball team finished out the weekend sweep in a 87-80 win over the SUNY Poly Wildcats. The Owls efficient shooting helped them earn the win vs the North Atlantic Conference Cross-Divisional opponent, shooting 56.6% from the field and 41.7% from beyond the arc.
The Owls found themselves down six at the half, as the Wildcats finished the first half strong despite some high scoring by a couple Owls players. The Owls slowly battled back to eventually take the lead after a couple made shots by Charlie Mellick (Canberra, Australia) off the bench. The Wildcats took the lead back briefly before UMPI jumped back on top. A couple late runs by the Owls, including a 6-2 run to finish the game thanks to some solid defense and clutch free throws, eventually put the game away.
Griffin Guerrette (Presque Isle, ME) shot the lights out in today's game, finishing with 33 points, off 10-16 shooting, 4-6 from beyond the arc, 9-11 from the free throw line, while adding five rebounds and only one turnover in the 39 minutes played. Dany Harris (Danbury, CT) yet again had an efficient game, scoring 20 points off 7-12 shooting to go along with his seven rebounds and four steals. Glen Jones (Stamford, CT) also added to the Owls efficiency with 14 points on 6-8 shooting.
The Owls advance to 7-7 on the year and now sit at 3-2 in the NAC. UMPI will continue their conference play by traveling to Maine Maritime Academy where they will play a divisional double header, Jan. 21 and 22.
