Presque Isle, ME – The UMPI Owls men's basketball team hosted their season opener vs Lesley University Lynx. The Lynx came away with the victory after a second half comeback, 101-99. Despite a 20 point first have lead the Owls let the game slip away with 16 second half turnovers.
The Owls came out of the gate with some high energy on the offensive end behind and early seven points by Senior captain Griffin Guerrette (Presque Isle, ME). Gilbert Jean Mendez (Clearwater, FL) put up 11 points in the first half as he was able to get to the basket at will. Just as the Owls offense was coming to full swing, DanyJoel Harris (Danbury, CT) came off the bench with a huge spark, scoring 21 first half points off 9-10 shooting and 3-4 from the free throw line. This gave the Owls a 64-44 lead.
The second half was all Lynx as the Owls struggled with their defensive pressure. The Lynx bounced back from their 20-point deficit behind Gabe McCary's 22 second half point performance, giving him a game high total of 35 points. It was not until the 2 minutes of the game where the Lynx were able to tie the game and eventually take the lead as they maintained momentum.
Harris led the Owls with 25 points and 15 rebounds, shooting 11-15 from the field and 3-5 from the free throw line. Jean Mendez finished the game with 23 points and seven rebounds, shooting 9-17.
The Owls will look to bounce back as they host Aroostook County opponent U-Maine at Fort Kent in a home game on Tuesday Nov. 9 at 7:00PM.
