Fort Kent, ME – The Owls men's basketball team traveled to Fort Kent to play Aroostook County rivals U-Maine at Fort Kent, in their first of back to back match ups on their final weekend of the year. The Owls went on to win the close match up by only three points, 67-64.
The back and forth game started early with a slight edge in favor of the Bengals throughout the first 10 minutes of the game, before the game was tied 18 with 10 minutes left in the game. Continuing to keep the game close throughout the first half the Owls were able to take the lead by one going into the half, 30-29. A quick 7-0 run in UMPI's favor, coming out of the first half, gave them a larger lead and some momentum early. The Owls were able to keep the lead early in the second half until the 11-minute mark, where the Bengals were able to yet again, tie the game 48 apiece. The Bengals fought hard late in the second half, bringing the game close, with one more tie and bringing the lead within one-point on separate times.
Despite the close calls by the Bengals late game scoring, the Owls never allowed the Bengals to gain the lead throughout the second half. Even with a last second shot to bring the game to a tie, the Owls were able to pull off their second win of the year.
The Owls were led by Akhe McMichael (St. Petersburg, FL), with 24 points while shooting 50% from the three and a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line and adding four steals. Griffin Guerrette (Presque Isle, ME) finished the game with 13 points to go along with five rebounds. Captain KJ Minter (Elkton, MD) finished with an outstanding 12 rebounds in the game, four of which were offensive rebounds. Minter also had six points and four steals. Danyjoel Harris (Danbury, CT) gave a huge spark off the bench, after coming off injury, scoring seven points and grabbing four rebounds in just seven minutes.
The Owls will finish their season with their second match up vs UMFK. This will in Presque Isle, as the Owls will host the game with a 1:00pm tip off. Live links will be available at Owls.umpi.edu.
