Presque Isle, ME – The Owls men's basketball team hosted North Atlantic Conference opponent Husson University in a non-conference game. This being the first division III game played this year in the state of Maine, and the Owls first game in just under a year. The young Owls roster put up a tough fight vs the experienced Husson team, eventually losing 83-66.
Coming out with great energy and discipline for both Husson and UMPI, the teams were tied 13-13 at the 10-minute mark. After a little more back and forth, the Owls found themselves down five with just under five-minutes left in the first half. The Eagles then finished the first half with a 22-7 run to give them a 20-point lead going into the half, 52-32.
The Owls picked up their defense in the second half, holding the Eagles to only 31 points. Their defense was not enough to bring the Owls back, eventually running out of gas.
First year player Akhe McMichael (St. Petersburg, FL) led the Owls in scoring with 20 points in his first college game. The point guard added seven rebounds and two steals to his stat line, while shooting 4-4 from the free throw line. Griffin Guerrette (Presque Isle, ME) finished with 15 points, getting to the line and shooting 7-8 from the free throw line. Gilbert Jean (Dunedin, FL) finished with 10 points with four assists and four rebounds. Captain KJ Minter (Elkton, MD) finished with a near double-double with eight points and nine rebounds while shooting 50% from the field.
The Owls collectively shot 82% from the free throw line and finished with 12 assists on the game. The Eagles were led by senior guard Dj Bussey, finishing with 16 points and 4-5 from three.
The Owls will finish their double header against Husson tomorrow. The Owls will travel down as this time the Eagles will host, for a 3:30pm tip-off.
