Presque Isle, ME – The UMPI men's basketball team took on Northern Vermont University – Johnson in their second game of their back to back weekend. The Owls came out with a 73-68 win, behind the late game efforts of Shyquinn Dix (Jr. Stamford, CT). The Owls would celebrate their four seniors in their last home game of the year.
Forward Chad Bartlett from Bradley, ME in his first year with the men's basketball team. Chad was also presented his plaque for Senior Scholar Athlete, which he was awarded in the fall with the men's soccer team. Eric Anthony from Baltimore, MD was honored in his second year with the Owls, the guard is also one of the Owls captains. Te'Von Hines from Alexandria, VA, who is also a captain for the Owls. The guard was honored in his second year with the team. The final senior that was honored was Wilburn Griffith from Queens, NY. Griffith is in his third year with the Owls and was one of Coach Kane's first recruits when getting the job three years ago.
The Owls and Badgers fought throughout the game, with the largest lead being seven, in favor of the Badgers. UMPI found themselves down by six points with just three minutes to go in the game. Dix came back with back to back three's within a minute to tie the game at 68. Another big defensive stop by the Owls led to yet another made three by Dix to give UMPI the three-point lead with just 40 seconds remaining in the game. Another stop by the Owls sealed the win. As Dix led the team offensively the Owls whole team was able to hold the Badgers scoreless for the last three minutes of the game.
Dix led all scorers with 26 points off an incredible 10-15 shooting, 4-6 from the three to go along with eight rebounds, four assists and four steals. DeAndre Duncombe (Jr. Port St. Lucie, FL) finished with 16 points on 7-10 shooting.
The Owls finish with a 6-8 NAC record on the regular season and will play UMFK new in Fort Kent for their last regular season game of the year. The game will be Tuesday the 18th, 7:00 PM tip-off.
