Canton, NY – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Men's Basketball Team found itself in great position after the first 20 minutes of play in its North Atlantic Conference Quarterfinal game Saturday afternoon on the road at SUNY Canton. The Owls and Roos struggled to score early on in the contest before some great back and forth action saw UMPI take a 36 to 34 lead into the halftime break.
SUNY's 7'1" center Andrew Fitch scored the games first hoop on a screen and roll and the Owls Shyquinn Dix tied the game up quickly 2 to 2 on a drive and score. Both teams would then go scoreless for about 3 minutes before Fitch would score again inside and Brandon Adkisson would drain a 3 pointer for a 7 to 2 Roos lead. Griffin Guerrette (Fr. Presque Isle, ME) would connect on a long-range 3 pointer before Andrew Fitch hit 2 free throws and a Robert Holliday Jr. jumper would give the Home Team a 13 to 5 advantage. Guerrette would again hit a field goal from behind the arc and Shyquinn Dix (So. Stamford, CT) would score on a lob pass on an UMPI baseline out-of-bounds play. KJ Minter would follow with 2 foul shots and the Owls were only trailing 13 to 11. 30 seconds later, Dix would get a steal and score on a breakaway to tie the game up at 13 apiece. Guerrette would connect on his third 3 pointer of the half at the (7:38) mark to put UMPI up 20 to 17. With 2:35 remaining before the break, Shyquinn Dix would score on a fastbreak layup and get fouled. Dix would make his free throw and Me-Presque Isle went ahead 29 to 23. SUNY Canton would knott the game at 34 on two free throws by Adkisson late in the half before Dix would hit 2 more foul shots with 4.4 seconds left and UMPI would have their 2 point halftime lead.
SUNY would open up a lead early in the 2nd half 47 to 36 riding the back of Jordan Stewart who scored inside, then hit a 3 pointer before throwing down a dunk for the 9 point advantage. UMPI would storm back as Griffin Guerrette would hit a 3 pointer and Shyquinn Dix would score on a left handed reverse layup with an assist from Guerrette at the (14:44) mark. Holliday Jr. would knock down an elbow jumper and a 3 pointer to score a quick 5 points for SUNY Canton and a 52 to 45 lead at (13:42). Te'Von Hines (Jr. Woodbridge, VA) would score inside off a pass from Dix and DeAndre Duncomb would hit 1 of 2 foul shots to bring the Owls within two points 55 to 53 with (10:11) remaining. Wil Griffiths (Jr. Queens, NY) would also connect on 1 free throw before Fitch scored on a drive for the Roos. UMPI's DeAndre Duncomb (So. Port St. Lucie, FL) would drill a 3 pointer to tie the game at 57 apiece at the (8:35) mark of the 2nd half. With (4:08) remaining, SUNY Canton's Jordan Stewart would hit a long 3 pointer and give the Roo's their first double digit lead 69 to 59. SUNY Canton would slowing increase the margin down the stretch and move on to the NAC Semi-finals with an 85 to 63 win.
The Owls were paced by Shyquinn Dix with 24 points and 6 assists, and freshman guard Griffin Guerrette closed out his 1st collegiate season with 18 points (4 of 5 from the 3 point line) and 6 rebounds. Te'Von Hines added 8 points and 6 boards.
SUNY Canton was led by Robert Holliday who scored 24 points, had 6 rebounds, and dished out 6 assists. Three teammates followed Holliday scoring in double figures with Brandon Adkisson netting 17, Jordan Stewart 15 and Andrew Fitch with 10 points.
