Presque Isle, ME – In a back and forth game that included eight lead changes the SUNY Canton men's basketball team squeaked out a win over the University of Maine at Presque Isle, 68-64. SUNY Canton improves to 8-8 overall (4-1 conference), while UMPI falls to 6-8 overall (0-5 conference).
In a back and forth first half that left the Roos ahead at the break 33-28 Robert Holiday Jr. led the way with nine first half points on 4-7 shooting. Jordan Stewart contributed seven points, and Danny Santana and Brandon Adkisson each came off the bench to chip in six points a piece. Shyquinn Dix (SO. Stamford, CT) led the Owls with 12 first half points and seven rebounds.
With 9:10 left in the game Brandon Adkisson knock down a jump shot to extend the Roos to their largest lead of the game 54-45. Dix and Griffin Guerrette (FR. Presque Isle, ME) would spear an Owls 15-4 run to take a 60-58 lead with 5:29 remaining. During the Owls' run Guerrette would knock down two three-pointers and a lay-up for eight points as Dix would knock down a 3-pointer and two midrange jumpers for seven points.
With 2:22 remaining Santana scored a lay-up as SUNY-Canton took a 65-64 lead. The Roos' would get a stop on the next possession and offensive rebound before knocking down one free throw to take a 66-64 lead with 22 seconds remaining. Canton would get another stop and Jordan Stewart would ice the game from the line going 2-2 with six seconds left to take the 68-64 victory.
Leading the way for the Roos was Holiday with 16 points. Stewart added 14 points and seven rebounds, while Adkisson and Santana finished with 12 points on the night. The Owls were led by Shy dix who recorded a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Guerrette would chip in with 13 points and Jahvion Lockridge (SO. Grand Rapids MI) recorded 11 points and seven rebounds.
The Owls will take on the Roos again tomorrow at 1:00 PM.
