PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (7-7) fell at home to the Bowdoin College Polar Bears (10-3) by a score of 81-62 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Owls stood toe to toe with their guests for the first six and a half minutes and found themselves tied at 13. The Polar Bear's defense turned up their intensity at that point, as they used their size advantage to force UMPI to shoot from the perimeter. Bowdoin would go on a 15-2 run to take control of the matchup. The Polar Bears would shoot 48.3% from the floor in the first half, including going seven of 14 from behind the three point arc, on their way to a 43-25 lead at the half.
The Owls would never really be able to cut into the lead in the second half, although they would match Bowdoin throughout. UMPI's offense would pick up the pace, shooting 48.3% from the field in the second half, bettering their 26.7% in the first half. The Polar Bears would continue their strong performance, converting on 46.9% in the second half, and holding off the Owls for the 18-point victory.
With 11:33 remaining in the game, Bowdoin's Jack Simonds (JR, Falmouth, ME) would make a layup that would put him over the 1,000 point milestone for his career. He would finish with 16 points, five rebound, and five assists. David Reynolds (SO, Raliegh, NC) would lead the Polar Bears with 22 points in the afternoon.
For the Owls Deandre Duncombe (FR, Port St. Lucie, FL) would lead the scoring with 14 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Jahvion Lockridge (FR, Grand Rapids, MI) would score 13 points off the bench, while Kevin Collins (SR, Fort Washington, MD) would go three for seven from behind the arc to net 12 points on the day.
The Owls will hit the road and face off with SUNY Delhi on Monday the 15th. That game is scheduled for a 7 pm tip.
