Hot Shooting Propels Owls Past Pine Manor

WATERVILLE, ME – At Thomas College, the University of Maine at Presque Isle Men's Basketball team (1-0) would go on a 36-11 run to end the first half and take control of the game.  The Owls would never trail in the second half, downing the Pine Manor Gators (0-2) by a score of 92-73.

After a slow start for both teams, the Owls would find themselves down 21-9 midway through the first half.  The UMPI offense would come to life at that point and the Owls would reclaim the lead for good with 4:38 remaining in the first half.  Hot shooting would put UMPI up 45-32 at the half.

The Gators would make a run to start the second half, and be down just seven with 16 minutes to play.  The Owl would not let Pine Manor close in any closer, and their offense would take over again, opening up a 23-point lead with just under ten minutes to play.  The outcome would never be in doubt from that point forward, as the Owls would cruise to the 19-point victory.

As a team the Owls would hit 15 of 31 three-point attempts, good for 48.4% from behind the arc.  UMPI would shoot 49.1% overall, while Pine Manor would hit 41.3% of their shots.  The Gators would struggle from deep, connecting on just three of 19 from behind the three-point line.

"We had great energy and effort tonight," said first year head coach Dan Kane.  "Shot with confidence and did a great job of executing our defensive game plan.  We need to improve on turnovers, however we were able to hit big shots when Pine Manor made a run at a comeback."

Kevin Collins (SR, Fort Washington, MD) would lead all scorers with 25 points on six off eleven from three.  Maurice Harris (SR, Miami, FL) would hit six of nine from behind the arc on his way to 24 points and seven rebounds.  Deandre Duncombe (FR, Port St. Lucie, FL) would end the game with 16 points, six rebounds, and five assists.  Willburn Griffiths (SO, Queens, NY) would record a double-double, collecting 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The Owls continue in the tournament on Saturday afternoon.  They will face Maine-Machias, a game that is scheduled to tip at 3 pm.
