Owls Drop Last Home Contest of the Year

PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (11-11) were not able to keep up with University of Maine at Fort Kent (22-8) on Sunday afternoon, as the Bengals would win the game by a score of 86-64.

On Senior Day the Owls honored a number of young men playing in their last home game.  Perhaps no one had a more touching honor bestowed upon them the Kristijan Gavrilovski (SO, Gostivar, Macedonia).  After suffering a career ending injury in just the third game this season, Head Coach Mike Holmes had planned on having Gavrilovski suit up and be introduced with the starting lineup.  In a true act of sportsmanship, UMFK Head Coach Tom Bird proposed that Gavrilovski start and play the first minute of the game.  The Owls were allowed to win the opening tip uncontested and forward the ball to Kristijan to score the opening basket of the game.  The Bengals were then allowed to score an uncontested layup of their own, after which the Owls inbounded the ball and dribbled to half court, where the ball was "tied up" by two players intentionally, drawing a jump ball call with the possession arrow favoring the Bengals.  The game was then delayed for several seconds as Gavrilovski was greeted by a touching standing ovation from the Owls fans and his teammates as he checked out of his last career game.

The Owls would take an early advantage, building a 9-2 lead.  The Bengals fought back quickly and the two teams would battle closely for the next several minutes.  Derek Healy (SR, Hanover, MA) would hit a three-pointer with just over six minutes left to pull the Owls within three, but the momentum would take a big swing towards the Bengals at that point.  UMFK would finish the half on a 20-6 run and open up a 17-point halftime lead.

The Owls would never really be able to cut into the Bengal lead in the second half as UMFK would cruise to the victory.  The visitors would shoot 42.9% from the field in the game including 12 of 28 from beyond the three-point arc.  Roosevelt Smith Jr. (SR, Fairfield, CA) was impressive, scoring 30 points, grabbing ten rebounds, four assists, and three steals in the game.  Travis Harlin Jr. (JR, Long Beach, CA) also had a big afternoon with 24 points and five rebounds.

UMPI would be led Healy who would score 14 points and have five assists.  Nick Lenhard (SR, Falcon, CO) scored 11 points, while Maurice Harris (JR, Miami, FL) would score ten points and grab seven rebounds.

The Owls will end their regular season schedule on the road as they travel to Landmark College on Friday.  That game is scheduled for a 7 PM tip.
