PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (10-9) extended their winning streak to three games, downing the University of Maine at Augusta Moose (10-11) by a score of 78-54.
The Owls jumped out to an early lead and would never give it up. Just over five minutes into the game Derek Healy (JR, Hanover, MA) would steal a ball and set up a fast break opportunity and hit senior teammate Chase Vicaire (Mattawamkeag, ME) for a layup to put the Owls up 9-3. At the 13:07 mark in the first half, Vicaire would get a steal of his own and be all alone for a layup that put the Owls up 11-3. With those four points Vicaire was able to reach the 1,000 point mark in his collegiate career.
UMPI continued to stretch its lead throughout the half. Kevin Collins (SO, Fort Washington, MD) would give the Owls their biggest lead of the game at the half, as he hit a buzzer beating three point basket to send the home team to the locker room up by 15 points.
The Owls' stifling defense allowed them to continue to open up a lead in the second half. With 15 minutes remaining, UMPI would hold a comfortable 21 point lead. The Moose would make it interesting around the ten minute mark, as Noah Thompson (FR, Yuma, AZ) would hit three shots from behind the arc in a two minute span to cut the Owls lead to 12 points. A 15-6 UMPI run immediately following Thompson's outburst would put the game out of reach for the Moose, and the Owls would end the day with a 24 point victory.
Augusta would shoot just 27.4% from the floor on the day as the Owls' defense would put pressure on the Moose's offense all game. UMA would turn the ball over 16 times, and the Owls would collect 11 steals on the day.
UMPI would have five players reach double digits in the game. Vicaire, Healy, and Brandon McGill (JR, Hamilton, NJ) would end with 13 points apiece. Kevin Collins would score 11 points and grab eight rebounds, while Maurice Harris (SO, Miami, FL) would score ten, while collecting seven rebounds.
UMA's leading scorer Keith Chesley (SR, Clinton, ME) would end with 26 points in the game, including five of eight from three point. Thompson would finish with 11 points, and Brandon Rogers (SR, Turlock, CA) would amass 13 rebounds.
