Owls Comeback Late to Beat SMCC

PORTLAND, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (9-9) used a late game comeback to beat the Southern Maine Community College Seawolves (10-13) in Portland by a score of 72-64.

The Owls would take an early lead, scoring on the first possession of the game.  UMPI's offense would go cold, however, and over the next five minutes SMCC would build a 13-2 lead.  The Seawolves would stay hot, shooting over 50% from the floor in the first half to stay in control.  The Owls would find themselves down 12 at the half.

While SMCC would continue to shoot well in the second half, the Owls would rely on short runs to slowly cut into the Seawolves' lead.  It would take over ten minutes into the second half for UMPI to tie the game again, but it wouldn't be until 2:12 left in the game that Maurice Harris (SO, Miami, FL) would hit a three point shot to put the Owls ahead for the first time since the first possession of the game.  That lead would hold as a minute later Nick Lenhard (JR, Falcon, CO) would hit another three pointer to extend the lead, and Junior guard Derek Healy (Hanover, MA) would score eight points in the last minute of the game to seal on Owls victory.

Harris would set the pace with 19 points on the night.  Chase Vicaire (SR, Mattawamkeag, ME) would add 16 points, while Healy would add 14 points for the Owls.

Matt Talbot (SO, Portland, ME) would lead the SMCC attack with 18 points and 11 rebounds.  Jordan DeRosby (JR, Waterville, ME) would add 13 points.

The Owls return home for a Sunday afternoon matchup with Maine Augusta at 2 PM.

GAME NOTES: After tonight's game Chase Vicaire now has 996 career points and will look to surpass the 1,000 point mark on Sunday afternoon at home.
