AUGUSTA, ME – A late comeback fell just short, as the University of Maine at Augusta (4-5) held on at home to narrowly defeat the University of Maine at Presque Isle (3-2) by a score of 62-61.
The teams would match each other blow for blow in the first half. The Owls would shoot 35% from the field while the hosts would match with a 37.9% from the field, including six of fourteen from the three point line. While both teams would go on small runs, neither team was able to grab control and ten lead changes would lead to a tie score at 29 at halftime.
The second half started off in a similar fashion. Both teams would take leads at various points. With just over 11 minutes left in the game, the Owls would suddenly go on a scoring drought, allowing the Moose to take go on a 9-0 run and extend their lead to 54-44. It wasn't until 6:47 that Brandon McGill (JR, Hamilton, NJ) would spark the Owls' offense again. With 3:03 left in the game the home team would hold a 59-50 lead, and would look to put the game away. A Kevin Collins (SO, Oxen Hill, MD) layup, a quick defensive stop, and a Chase Vicaire (SR, Mattawamkeag, ME) three point basket would cut into that lead. Maine Augusta would score quickly and with just over a minute McGill would be fouled as he laid in a shot. His free throw would pull the Owls within three. That would be the last field goal UMPI would convert. Maine-Presque Isle would get their chance from the free throw line, but only convert on two of four down the stretch. A Vicaire three point attempt to win the game in the waning seconds of the game would not fall and the Moose would hang on to win by one.
UMA's Keith Chesley (SR, Clinton, ME) would lead all scorers with 18 points and while grabbing 11 rebounds. Brandon Rogers (SR, Turlock, CA) would put up 15 points to go with his 13 rebounds on the night.
The Owls were led by Kim Collins (JR, Oxen Hill, MD) who would score eleven points off the bench. Vicaire would add ten points, while Maurice Harris (SO, Miami, FL) would grab ten rebounds to go with his nine points.
The Owls travel to Colby College on Wednesday for a midweek matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
