Presque Isle, Maine -- With his father in the stands watching him play collegiate basketball for the first time, England native Michael Warner made his last home college game memorable, by scoring a game-high 24 to lead the UMaine-Presque Isle men over the #1 ranked Central Maine Community College 96-93 Saturday afternoon.
The Owls (8-13) held a 49-43 lead going into halftime using the long range shooting of both Presque Isle seniors Warner and Claude "Shmoke" Louis. Louis had 4 from beyond the arc and Warner added two and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field to help build the Owl advantage.
At the 8:22 mark of the second half, Karze Cummings made a jumper to give Central Maine a 72-68 lead. The Owls Chase Vicaire would spark a 21-6 run over the next 6 minutes, by scoring 12 points, including two three-pointers to swing the 89-78 lead and the momentum back to UMaine-Presque Isle.
Presque Isle was cruising, holding a 91-82 lead with 54 seconds to go in the game, but Central Maine would claw back into the game with smart fouls and two long three-pointers from Shaun Hill. Presque Isle would only make 5-of-10 foul shots in the last minute to give Central hope that was extended when the Owls Louis fouled Hill on his long made three-pointer with 5 seconds on the clock. Hill's long bomb and subsequent made foul shot shaved the Presque Isle lead to one, at 94-93.
The Owls Derek Healy was fouled and with his two makes from the charity stripe, the Owls were able to seal the victory and avenge a 126-71 loss to Central earlier in January.
Thiago Conceicao added 20 points and 12 boards for the Owls, Vicaire had 17 and senior Louis tallied 12 in his last appearance for the home folks in Presque Isle.
Xavier Colbert was high man for Central with 21 points, Hill added 15 and Carrington Miller 14 for the Mustangs.
The upset win marks the last time Warner and Louis will taste victory at home as the Owls finish the remainder of their season on the road. During their time at Presque Isle, the duo has provided the Blue & Gold fans with tremendous trills including three wins against arch-rival UM-Fort Kent in the past two seasons. Both Warner and Louis were named to the Association of NCAA Division III Independents First Team All-Independents squad in 2012-13.
The Owls will next travel to Colby College for a game on February 11.
