Augusta No Match for Presque Isle Men

(PRESQUE ISLE, ME) -- When Saturday started, University of Maine-Presque Isle men's basketball player Jordan McLaughlin (Fr./Washburn, ME) had 18 points in his college career.  In his teams' 121-61 win over UMaine-Augusta, he almost doubled that total.  McLaughlin hit an incredible 12-15 baskets from the floor including 8-10 from behind the arc to score 33 points in 16 minutes of action.

The Owls pulled back to within one game of .500 with the win, improving to 8-9.  UMA fell to 8-11.

Presque Isle went for the knock out punch early, going up 12-2 in the game's first 3 minutes and at the midway point of the half holding a 38-12 advantage.  By halftime the Owls were up 60-26 and Chase Vicaire (Fr./Mattawamkeag, ME) had scored 16 points in 16 minutes.

The second half belonged to McLaughlin and the Owls' three-point shooters.  With 9 points at the break, the rookie guard hit 6-7 on his three-pointers in the 2nd.  For the game, Presque Isle hit a school record 21 three-pointers on 39 attempts.  The hosts were solid from everywhere, shooting 58% from the floor, 54% on 3's, and 71% from the free throw line.

Augusta, who will play UMaine-Fort Kent tomorrow, had a trio of double digit scorers led by Joseph Nguyen's (Orlando, FL) 17.  Garrett Alley (Union, ME) pumped in 14 and Arron Cochran (San Antonio, TX) added 11.

On the other sideline, six Owls reached double figures.  In addition to McLaughlin's 33, Mike Warner (Jr./Norwich, UK) followed up on his career high 28 points on Friday night with a 22- point performance against the Moose.  Vicaire finished with 22 off the bench and Aaron Hutchins (Jr./East Millinocket, ME) also came off the pine to record 16 points.

Patrick Manifold (Sr./Great Yarmouth, UK) and Claude "Shmoke" Louis (Jr./Union, NJ) round out the list with 11 and 10, respectively.

With everyone on the roster playing 9 minutes or more, the Owls will have an opportunity to be well rested heading into the final contest of a three-in-four-days stretch on Monday when they host Eastern Nazerene.  The Martin Luther King, Jr. Day game will have a special afternoon start of 2pm.


Game Notes

*  Saturday's win gave the Owls a sweep of the season series with the Moose.  UMPI defeated UMA back on December 3rd, 89-46.  

*  McLaughlin's performance earned him the Bradley's Citgo & Car Wash "Player of the Game" honor.

*  Presque Isle's 27 assists in the contest were a season-high.

*  With one more win in the team's final eight contests, the Owls will at least triple last season's win total (3).
