The Owls Fall to the Mules in Season Opener

Waterville, ME – The Owls baseball team started off their 2022 season with a Maine state rival, Colby College. The NESCAC opponent won both of the double header games, 6-0 and 11-2, at their home field.

Game 1 (6-0 – Mules):

How it happened:

The Owls headed into the bottom of the second even before the Mules of Colby gained a three run lead off three hits including a double. The third and fourth innings followed with no hits, until the Mules added another run in the fifth inning off another double. A single in the sixth added two more runs to the Mules.

On the mound:

Steed Outler (Flower Mound, TX) pitched the complete game for the Owls in the first game of the year. In the six innings, he allowed seven hits, and five earned runs, while striking out five batters. Elijah Cohen earned the win for Colby pitching six innings and only allowing one hit, with five strikeouts.

At the plate:

Bailey Corley (Lake Stevens, WA) recorded the Owls only hit of the game in his only at bat. Marcus Forrester recorded two hits and four RBI's for the Mules.

Game 2 (11-2 – Mules):

How it happened:

Both teams remained hitless going into the third inning, the Mules would strike first with a two RBI double and an unearned run to give them a three run lead. The Owls in the top of the fifth came right back with a two RBI single from Payton Jones (Green Cove Springs, FL) to bring home Anthony Searels (Middleburg, FL) and Logan MacDougal (Summerside, Canada). The Mules answered right back with a four-run fifth inning. The Mules then added a three run homer and an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning.

On the mound:

Nicholas Perfitt (Houlton, ME) started the game, pitching the first five innings striking out five batters and allowing seven hits and five earned runs. Kaiden Crowley (Jonesport, ME) and Jordan Young (Graham, NC) finished out the final inning. Jack Bohrer earned the win for the Mules, pitching 4.2 innings and striking out eight batters and allowing three hits and one earned run.

At the plate:

Jones finished with that single hit and two RBI's the Owls totaled three hits and one walk on the game. Brady O'Brien finished with five RBI's for the Mules including his home run in the sixth.

 

The Owls will head back to Presque Isle before heading down to Florida to play in their nine-game spring tournament.
