Owls Fall to Hornets

Presque Isle, ME – The UMPI baseball team took on Northern Vermont University – Lyndon in their second pair of doubleheaders on the weekend. Hosting their games at Presque Isle High School, their second day hosting. The Owls lost both games 6-2 and 15-7.

Game 1

6-2

Nick Perfitt (Houlton, ME) got the start for the Owls in game one, pitching the first five innings. Finishing with seven strikeouts and allowing five earned runs and six hits. Patrick Outler (Flower Mound, TX) pitched the final two innings of the game for UMPI. Sam Ognenoff pitched the complete game for the Hornets, earning the win and only allowing two earned runs and five hits.

The day started slower than the previous day's games, with no runs until the third inning. The Hornets scored two runs in the third off a single and sacrifice fly, giving them a two-point lead. It was not until the fourth inning where the Owls put their first points on the board. Perfitt hit his first career homer for the Owls cutting the lead to one.

The Hornets then extended their lead in the fifth, off a two RBI homer and a two RBI double, giving them a 6-1 lead. A single in the bottom of the sixth by Timothy Burns (Green Cove Springs, FL) brought William Stinson (Norridgewock, ME) home for another Owls run, but this was not enough for the comeback.

Game 2

15-7

Bailey Corley (Lake Stevens, WA) started the game on the mound for game two, pitching two innings. Letting up six runs. Along with three other Owls, Roberto De La Pena (Porterville, CA) pitched in the game. Pena pitched 3.2 innings letting up only three earned runs. Codi Smith pitched the first six innings for the Hornets finishing with 13 strikeouts and letting up three earned runs.

An early start for the Hornets led to a three run first inning off two homers, another three runs followed for Lyndon in the second. Six more runs in the third extended their lead to 12 runs to nothing. After the Hornets offense slowed down for the following two innings. They picked it back up with a three-run sixth inning.

The Owls offense woke up in the sixth inning with a Timothy Burns (Green Cove Springs, FL) double, bringing one run in. Corley followed with a two RBI double giving them their third run of the inning. Another late run in the seventh led to four more runs including three that were walked in with the bases loaded. While Nick Perfitt (Houlton, ME) hit a sacrifice fly to bring in another.

 

The Owls will face North Atlantic Conference opponent University of Maine at Farmington next weekend in a five-game series.
