Owls Fall to Hornets Despite Late Game Two Comeback

Presque Isle, ME – The UMPI Owls Baseball team hosted their first home games of the year at Presque Isle High School. Playing North Atlantic Conference opponent Northern Vermont University – Lyndon. The Hornets took both wins on the days doubleheader, despite a late game two comeback. Falling in game one 19-3 and game two 19-15.

Game 1

19-3, Lyndon

Kaiden Crowley (Jonesport, ME) started the game for the Owls pitching the first two innings, giving up five earned runs and walking five batters. An array of pitchers on the UMPI roster pitched in the game, giving up a total of 14 hits and 14 walks as well as 15 earned runs. Cooper Whitehouse started the game and earned the win with seven strikeouts and one earned run allowed.

It was all Hornets in the first four innings, getting five runs off three hits in the second inning. Following with a three run third inning off two hits and another five-run inning in the fourth, once again off three hits. In the bottom of the fourth off a RBI single by first year Payton Jones (Green Cove Springs, FL), scoring Patrick Outler (Flower Mound, TX).

The Hornets Doherty, hit a solo homer in the fifth. While the Owls were able to score off a sacrifice fly by Bailey Corley (Lake Stevens, WA). The Hornets added two more runs in the sixth, as the Owls added one run in the bottom of the sixth off a ground out by Joey Lippo (Coupeville, WA). The Hornets ended the game with a the run seventh.

Game 2

19-15, Lyndon

In a high scoring game, Patrick Outler (Flower Mound, TX) earned the start pitching two innings and giving up eight earned runs. Followed by Joey Lippo (Coupeville, WA), pitching the next 2.2 innings, giving up 10 earned runs. Dylan Crump earned the win for the Hornets despite giving up 11 earned runs.

The Hornets came out to a quick start with a three run first inning and a five run second. Adding another run in the third gave them a nine-run lead. Until a couple of single by the Owls Lippo and Joseph Blake (Standardsville, VA). An RBI single by Bailey Corley (Lake Stevens, WA) followed three more runs by the Hornets in the top of the fourth. A big inning for the Hornets came with six runs in the top of the fifth. An even bigger inning came from the Owls scoring ten runs.

The big fifth inning for the Owls brought them within five runs. Timothy Burns (Green Cove Springs, FL) hit a two RBI double, followed by an RBI single by Nick Perfitt (Houlton, ME) Corley followed, by getting on with an error, which scored two runs. Outler then doubled to bring another run in. Not done there, Payton Jones (Green Cove Springs, FL) hit an RBI single, then a three RBI double by William Stinson (Norridgewock, ME), which nearly went over the fence gave them their tenth run of the inning.

Another two run for UMPI, off a double by Lippo, followed one run in the sixth for the Hornets. Within four runs, the Owls were not able to complete the comeback as the game ended in seven innings.

 

UMPI will take on Lyndon in another doubleheader tomorrow noon and 2:30pm starts.
