Bangor, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Baseball Team closed out a 5 game weekend series at Husson University with a 9 inning game that kicked off at 11:00AM Sunday at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex. The young UMPI Team once again played the top ranked Eagles (15-4) tough losing 6 to 4.
The Owls who lost a close 3 to 2 decision to Husson in the 1st game of Saturday's doubleheader and trailed only 2 to 0 late in the 2nd game, found themselves with an early 2 to 1 lead going into the bottom of the 2nd inning on Sunday. Before the Eagles plated 4 runs after two were out and gained a 5 to 2 advantage.
UMPI scored twice in the top of the 2nd inning when Timothy Burns (Green Cove Springs, FL) was hit by a pitch and Patrick Outler (Flower Mound, TX) moved Burns to second base with a sacrifice bunt. Jordan Hanscom (Lincoln, ME) followed with a walk before Joey Lippo (Coupeville, WA) punched a RBI single to right field. Joseph Blake (Standardsville, VA) kept the inning going with a two-out RBI single and the Owls were robbed of another run when William Stinson (Norridgewock, ME) ripped a line drive back up the middle that was ticketed for centerfield before pitcher Logan Sheridan knocked it down and was able to pick the ball up and throw Stinson out.
Husson picked up another run in the bottom of the 3rd inning on a RBI single by Austin Snow to go up by a 6 to 3 score. The game remained that way until the 7th due in large part to an outstanding relief pitching effort by Hanscom who kept the Eagles at bay. In the top half of the 7th Payton Jones (Green Cove Springs, FL) led off for the Owls with a single to centerfield. Lippo followed with a single of his own to right field. Blake moved both runners along with a sacrifice bunt. Stinson loaded the bases beating out an infield single and Bailey Corley (Lake Stevens, WA) connected for a RBI single. Nick Perfitt (Houlton, ME) then reached on a fielder's choice scoring Lippo on the play and UMPI closed to within 6 to 4.
Husson appeared to be ready to add some insurance runs in the bottom of the inning. After a Husson single by Chris Ewanik and a walk, UMPI's Outler came on in relief of Hanscom and the Eagles quickly loaded the bases with nobody out on a bunt single down the third baseline by Austin Baron. Outler then induced two infield fly outs and finished off the inning with a strike out leaving all 3 runners stranded.
The Owls put two men on the 8th but could not produce a run and in the 9th inning Husson pitcher Jackson Thayer picked up the save by striking out the side. Lippo and Stinson were repeat hitters for UMPI with 2 hits apiece and Perfitt added a double. Ewanik went 3 for 4 at the plate for Husson.
UMPI will host Northern Vermont-Lyndon May 1st and May 2nd for a doubleheader both days.
