Lyndonville, VT - The term "snake-bit" may best sum of the University of Maine-Presque Isle Baseball Team when it comes to the 2019 season. On Sunday afternoon the Owls lost their 4th game this Spring that went into extra innings. UMPI had fallen in another contest in the last inning of the game and twice in the next to the last inning. On Sunday the Owls fell in the 1st game of a doubleheader at Northern Vermont-Lyndon 6 to 5 in eight innings in a very well played college baseball game.
UMPI got on the scoreboard in the top of the 1st inning when Will Stinson and Ryan Sanderson each singled. Third baseman Amiyn Summers (Fr. Paulding County, GA) came to the plate and deposited a RBI basehit into centerfield for a quick 1 to 0 Owls lead.
In the top of the 3rd frame, Ryan Sanderson (Sr. Cow Bay, NS) belted a homerun over the rightfield fence to give Me-Presque Isle a 2 to 0 advantage. In the bottom of the inning Lyndon scored 3 unearned runs after the Owls only error of the game, two of which came across on a Jason Doris double with two outs.
UMPI bounced right back in the top of the 4th when Alexe De La Pena reached on an infield grounder and bobble and Justin Mason worked Hornets starting pitcher James Munday for a walk. Brad Patterson (Jr. Harker Heights, TX) came through with a RBI single soring De La Pena to tie up the ballgame. Will Stinson (Jr. Norridgewok, ME) followed with a RBI single scoring Mason and Ryan Sanderson ripped a shot into left center scoring Stinson all the way from first base and a 5 to 3 Owls lead.
In the bottom of the 5th inning the Hornets got one run back on a RBI single by Caleb LaRoche and Lyndon would tie the game up in the 6th scoring a run on an infield groundout. Neither Team would score in the 7th and the game would move on to extra innings.
In the bottom of the 8th, UMPI reliever Ryan Sanderson would get the leadoff hitter on a fly out to De La Pena in rightfield. Noah Barton blooped a single into centerfield but Sanderson struck out the next hitter for the second out of the inning and it appeared the game may extend further into extra innings. Ben Rollins kept the inning alive for Lyndon though when he hit a curveball into left center for a double leaving runners on second and third. Codi Smith then hit a ground ball single in the shortstop hole just between UMPI's Summers and Patterson and the Hornets walked off with the win.
Owls starting pitcher Will Stinson had a very solid day on the mound going 5 innings, allowing 5 runs but only 2 earned runs, giving up 8 hits and walking 2. Sanderson was the tough luck loser in relief allowing the 1 run in the bottom of the 8th inning after pitching 2.2 innings for Me-Presque Isle. Offensively, Sanderson had 3 hits and 2 RBI and Patterson 2 hits and 1 RBI for UMPI.
Left John Boulay got the win in relief for the Hornets pitching 1 inning allowing no runs, no hits and striking out 1. Starter James Munday went 7 innings allowing 5 runs on 9 hits while striking out 8 UMPI hitters.
