UMPI Drops Doubleheader at Lyndon

Lyndonville, VT - Starting pitchers Braydon Kennedy of UMPI and Matt Page of Northern Vermont-Lyndon sailed through the first 3 and a half innings of Game #1 until the Hornets broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the 4th inning scoring 3 runs (1 unearned). Lyndon's Ryder Thornton knocked in 2 runs with a single and then Tucker Root scored on an infield error by the Owls.

The Hornets opened the game up in the 5th when they scored 5 runs to go ahead 8 to 0. Jason Doris ripped a RBI double to bring in Zac Johnson. Tucker Root followed with a RBI double of his own and the Owls found themselves in trouble as they were not able to figure out starting pitcher Matt page. Page went the first 7 innings of the 9 inning ballgame giving up 3 hits, walking 2 and striking out 13 UMPI hitters. 

Brad Patterson, Will Stinson, Richard Coulston, Jacob Moreno, Colby Spencer and Alexe De La Pena each had singles for the six UMPI hits.

Kennedy suffered the loss on the mound for Me-Presque Isle going 4.2 innings and allowing 8 runs (6 earned runs) on 6 hits, walking 2 and striking out 4. 


Game #2: The Owls continued to struggle offensively in the second game of the doubleheader but trailed just 2 to 1 going into the bottom of the 5th inning of the 7 inning game. UMPI starting pitcher Colby Spencer was sharp through 4 innings allowing 2 runs (1 unearned) in the 2nd inning on a 2-RBI double from Codi Smith. 

In the top of the 4th inning the Owls Will Stinson (Jr. Norridgewok, ME) singled to rightfield and moved up the second base on a groundout by Jacob Moreno (Fr. Bourne, MA). Braydon Kennedy (Fr. Titusville, FL) then drilled a double to deep leftfield scoring Stinson. 

In the bottom of the 5th inning, Lyndon broke open a close game scoring 5 runs of which 3 were unearned, and the Hornets went on to the 7 to 1 North Atlantic Conference victory. Codi Smith was dominant in the batters box for Lyndon going 4 for 4 with a double, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored in the nightcap.

NVU got strong pitching again in this game as Tyler Davis got the win on the hill going the distance allowing 1 run on just 2 hits, walking 1 and striking out 13. Spencer took the loss for UMPI. Cullen Marrella pitched 1.2 innings in relief for Me-Presque Isle.

Next up: The same two teams complete their 4 game series with a doubleheader tomorrow (Wednesday April 24th) at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM.
