Owls Fall to Colby College

Owls Fall to Colby College

Waterville, ME - The UMPI Owls got off to a great start on Monday afternoon against the Mules in a Non-Conference baseball game played on the turf at Colby College in Waterville, leading 4 to 0 going into the bottom of the 5th inning. However, things unraveled in the 5th and 6th innings as the Owls relief pitching couldn't stop the bleeding and Colby raced off with a 17 to 4 win.

It was a promising first half of the 9 inning ballgame as Me-Presque Isle got came out swinging and got on the scoreboard early with 3 runs in the top of the 1st inning. Leadoff hitter Brad Patterson (Jr. Harker Heights, TX) was awarded 1st base when hit by a pitch. Will Stinson (Jr. Norridgewok, ME) followed with a double to the gap in right center scoring Patterson all the way from 1st base. Shortstop Ryan Sanderson (Sr. Cow Bay, NS) came to the plate and drilled a towering homerun to right field with the "Tale of the Tape" measuring it at 385 feet and the Owls quickly found themselves up 3 to 0.

In the 3rd inning Designated Hitter Jacob Moreno (Fr. Bourne, MA) ripped a double to deep right centerfield plating Will Stinson and UMPI moved out to a 4 to 0 advantage.

UMPI starting Pitcher Jordan Young (Fr. Graham, NC) and the Owls kept the Mules at bay through 4 innings before Young ran into some trouble in the bottom of the 5th inning walking a batter, a bunt single by Will Phillips and a hit batter loaded the bases. Ian McCray came on in relief and William Wessman drew a walk forcing in the 1st Colby run. Catcher Ryan Hecht brought home the Mules 2nd run with a sacrifice fly to centerfielder Patterson and Keenan Luiliano followed with a RBI single. A Dylan Nastri single, before UMPI could get out of the inning, left Colby with a 5 to 4 lead.

In the bottom of the 6th inning Colby would put the game away scoring 8 runs as three more relievers couldn't shutdown the Mules Offense. UMPI used 5 pitchers and could not go to the strength of their pitching staff as they play a 4-game Conference Series at Northern Vermont-Lyndon tomorrow and Wednesday.

Owls starter Young went 4 innings giving up 3 runs on 3 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 1. Cameron Garfield got the win on the mound in relief for Colby.

Stinson and Moreno had doubles for the Owls while Sanderson had a homerun. Stinson was the Team's only repeat hitter.
