Lynn, MA - The UMPI Owls Baseball Team (1-11) came close to upsetting the highly touted Fisher College Falcons (24-10) at Fraser Field in Lynn, Massachusetts Saturday afternoon being tied 6 to 6 going into the bottom of the 8th inning. The Falcons then came through with a 5 run inning to win late 11 to 6 over the Owls.
Me-Presque Isle got on the scoreboard first when Justin Mason (Sr. Stamford, CT) crossed the plate in the top of the 3rd inning on a RBI single from Brad Patterson (Jr. Harker Heights, TX). Fisher College bounced right back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game 1 to 1 on a sac fly by Sami Bibovic.
The Falcons took the lead in the 4th inning 2 to 1 scoring an unearned run when Braxten Ramirez reached 2nd base on an infield throwing error and scored on a RBI single by Jean Carlos Figueroa.
In the 6th innining the Owls scored three times to take a 4 to 2 lead when Will Stinson (Jr. Norridgewok, ME) started off with a hard basehit to centerfield. Jacob Moreno (Fr. Bourne, MA) would follow with a walk putting men on 1st and 2nd and shortstop Ryan Sanderson (Sr. Cow Bay, NS) ripped a deep triple to the fence in right-center scoring Stinson and Moreno. Sanderson would then score on a double play ball grounder. The lead was short-lived as Fisher College would storm right back with 3 of their own runs in the bottom of the frame on a John Bautista RBI single, a run on a wild pitch and the tying run coming in on a RBI single by Reynaldo Vega.
UMPI would gain the lead again in the top of the 7th when Colby Spencer (So. Swan Quarter, NC) led off the inning with a walk and moved to second base on a passed ball. Richard Coulston (Fr. Bullhead City, AZ) then advanced Spencer to third base with a sacrifice bunt. Will Stinson would hit a slow roller and Spencer would score on an infield error. The see-saw battle between the two teams would continue as Mitchell Lundholm would score to tie the game back up when Jonathan Rosado reached on an Owls infield error.
UMPI would once again grab the lead in the top of the 8th inning as Jordan Hanscom (So. Lincoln, ME) walked with 1 out, followed by a base on balls to both Alexe De LaPena and Jacob Moreno. Richard Coulston laid down a perfect bunt for a hit to score Hanscom and the Owls were 6 outs away from victory. However, in the bottom of the 8th inning the Falcons bats really came to life as they were able string together 6 consecutive singles around an Owls error and a fielder's chocie, to score 5 runs and secure the win.
Jordan Young (fr. Graham, NC) had a solid start on the hill for Me-Presque Isle going 5.1 innings allowing 4 runs (3 earned runs) on 7 hits while walking 3 and striking out 2 Falcon hitters. Brad Patterson came on in relief and took the loss on the mound going 2.2 innings and giving up 7 runs on 6 hits. Hard throwing Yami Delgado, the 5th pitcher of the day for the Falcons, picked up the win going 1.2 innings, giving up 3 hits and striking out 3.
Lynn, MA - The Owls (1-12) fell behind to Pine Manor (5-10) early in their second game of the day on Saturday dropping an 11 to 3 decision to the Gators.
Pine Manor scored 4 runs in the 2nd inning on 4 hits and 2 UMPI errors and would add 5 more runs in the 5th inning highlighted by a 2 RBI single from Isaiah Mack. UMPI had closed the gap to 4 to 2 in the top of the 4th inning when Will Stinson led off with a walk before Jacob Moreno drove a deep run scoring double to right-centerfield. Moreno would score on an infield groundout by Jordan Hanscom.
Richard Coulston was the starting pitcher for UMPI going 5 innings and taking the loss on the mound. Ian McCray (Fr. Coppell, TX) pitched the final 3 innings. Sophomore Alec Hanney got the win for Pine Manor pitching 8.1 innings, allowing the 3 Owl runs while giving up only 4 hits, striking out 5 and walking 2.
Next up: UMPI will play a doubleheader at Rivier University in Nashua, NH on Sunday with the 1st game at 11:00 AM and the 2nd game at 1:30 PM.
