Purchase, NY—The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls baseball team fell in the first round of the CUNYAC Conference this Thursday May third against John Jay College Bloodhounds. Losing the game 8-7 with a late game walk-off.
The Bloodhounds opened with four runs in the opening frame. Ryan Osborne picked up a two-run inside-the-park homer and William De La Cruz followed by hitting a solo home run. Robert Moncino drove in the fourth run with an RBI ground out.
The Owls came alive in the second, cutting the lead in half by scoring a pair off a Bloodhound error. UMPI stayed hot in the following inning giving them the lead. Matt Curry (Caribou, ME) started it off with a single bringing fellow Senior Captain Matt Cauchon (Kingston, MA) home. Ryan Sanderson (Cow Bay, NS) followed with a double to bring Curry home and tie the game at four. Back to back doubles by Will Stinson (Skowhegan, ME) (2 RBI) and Colby Spencer (Fairfield, NC) brought in the final three runs for the Owls, giving them a 7-4 lead.
John Jay rallied back; a run scored by Steven Catuogno cut the lead down to 7-5 in the fourth. The Bloodhounds tied the game on a two-out two-run double by junior Alexis Martinez.
In the bottom of the ninth, Catuogno came through with a walk-off RBI single to center field to score pinch runner Dylan Locke to win the game 8-7.
Danny Wynne earned the win on the mound after he came in the third, earning five strikeouts and only allowing three hits in his win.
The Owls end their season with a 4-28 record.
