PRESQUE ISLE – The Presque Isle Owls took two games from Eastern Maine Community College by the score of 9-1 and 4-1 on Saturday.
In game one the Owls jumped out to an early lead on the visiting Golden Eagles when Matt Curry (FR, Caribou, ME) hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first to plate the first run of the game. The big inning came in the second, when Adam Begos (JR, Portland, ME) was hit by a pitch, Andrew Bartlett (JR, Damariscotta, ME) singled, and Keagan Page (FR, Washburn, ME) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Back to back singles by Ghazaleh Sailors (SR, Santa Barbara, CA) and Brady Rowe (JR, Halifax, NS) would drive in two. A fielder's choice off the bat of Jesus Garcia (FR, Jewett City, CT) for an RBI and an RBI ground out from Curry would plate four in the inning.
The only threat from the Golden Eagles was in the second, when a leadoff walk reached and scored off of a fielder's choice ground ball by Jacob Earl. Starter Matt Curry would close the door on the threat and find his rhythm from there. He would only allow one more runner on base the rest of the game and at one point struck out six consecutive batters to earn the complete game victory on the mound. Curry would allow just the one run on two hits and one walk, while striking out nine to earn the complete game victory on the mound for the Owls.
The Owls offense was led by Sailors who went two for three on the day with an RBI, a walk, and two runs scored.
The Golden Eagles would bounce back in the second game of the double header, putting pressure on the Owls early. With two outs Jared Smith would single off of starting pitcher Saul Nunez (FR, Presque Isle, ME). After stealing second, Smith would score on Lyndon Westrich putting the Golden Eagles up 1-0 in the early going. Nunez was able to work out of trouble in the second when Winston Simmonds singled with one out and stole second and third, but was left stranded, and again in the third when Delonte Underwood led off the inning with a single but was left standing on second at the end of the half inning.
Golden Eagle starter Corey Dziciewicz sat the Owls down in order in their half of the first three innings, striking out four in that span and sending the game to the fourth with EMCC still leading 1-0. Nunez would pitch a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth for the first time in his outing, perhaps giving the Owls the spark they needed.
Brady Rowe would lead off the bottom half of the fourth with a single and score on a Jesus Garcia double to right center, tying the game at one. It looked as though the inning would end in a tie score, but with two outs Nathan Cameron (FR, Epping, NH) came through with a hard hit single to score Garcia and give the Owls a lead. The game remained tight until the bottom of the sixth. The Owls were looking for some insurance runs and with one out Garcia and Curry hit back-to-back singles to set the up a two out RBI single from Adam Begos. Nathan Cameron added one more with his second hit of the game, a double to left field. Nunez worked a three up, three down top of the seventh to secure the victory for the Owls.
Nunez struck out six in his complete game victory on the mound. The Owls offense was led by Cameron's two for three effort, which included the double and two RBI. Garcia also went two for three with a double and one RBI in the game.
"We did a lot of things well today, and played some solid baseball today," said Owls Head Coach Mike Pankow. "The pitchers performed above expectations, we had not planned on them being able to give us complete game efforts, but both were very effective. We got some timely hitting and solid defense, and if we continue to put all three of those aspects together in the spring we will have some success. There are some areas in which we need to improve but we will continue to learn and grow."
The Owls will meet one more time for an inter squad scrimmage on Wednesday, October 15 to round out their fall season.
