Black Bears Defeat UMPI, 21-3

ORONO, Maine --   In a game that was more about the "experience" than anything else on Tuesday night, NCAA Division III University of Maine-Presque Isle took on NCAA Division I University of Maine at UMO's Mahaney Diamond in Orono, ME on Tuesday night.  The Owls (12-23) fell to the Black Bears (26-17), 21-3, thanks in part to seven run innings in both the 1st and the 7th.

Maine took a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The big shot came off the bat of Fran Whitten (Westborough, Mass) when he homered over the right field fence, plating Scott Heath ahead of him.

UMPI scored a run in the top of the second inning. Anthony Batchelder (Sr./West Enfield, ME) singled, advanced on an error and scored on an RBI groundout from Daniel Lewis (Jr./Gardner Mines, NS).

After Maine scored twice in the third to increase its lead to 9-1, UMPI added a run in the top of the fifth inning. Shane Smith singled and scored on another RBI ground out, this time from Jordan Duffy (Sr./Fort Augustus PEI).

Maine then tacked on 12 unanswered tallies between the 5th and 7th innings to go up 21-2.

Presque Isle finished the scoring in the 8th with one more single run, once again on an RBI groundout, this time coming from Logan McLaughlin (Fr./Mars Hill, ME).

The Owls did have the advantage in one category:  pitchers used.

Maine used six pitchers in the game. Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.) went three innings to pick up the win. He improves to 2-3.

The Owls sent a season-high eight pitchers to the bump.  Jake Fillebrown (Sr./Stoneham, ME) started, went three innings, and took the loss (2-5).  Included in the "call to arms" was 2nd baseman Cam Morrell (Jr./Harpswell, ME).  Morrell threw .1 innings, gave up 2 hits and a run (earned).

There was some excitement late in the game for the Owls thanks to Ghazaleh Sailors (So./Santa Barbara, CA).    The last of the Owl hurlers on the night, Sailors, who shunned scholarship offers to play softball to take her shot at baseball for UMPI, pitched a scoreless 8th inning.  It is thought to be the first time a female pitcher has thrown a scoreless frame, vs. an NCAA Division I team.

UMPI returns home this weekend to play its final four games of the season.  On Saturday and Sunday the squad with play doubleheaders against Eastern Maine Community College.  1pm and 3pm will be the start times on Saturday while Sunday's contests will take place at 12pm and 2pm.
