Stewart Picks Up 100th Hit in High Scoring Split with UMA

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AUGUSTA, ME

The UMPI Softball Offense woke back up after an underwhelming performance at Thomas College. The Owls offense has statistically been among the best in the conference all season, and Monday's twin-bill at University of Maine at Augusta was no exception, though the Moose could not be contained in game one, UMPI bounced back in game two with a dominant victory

Game 1: 17-9 Moose

UMPI got on the board in the 1st inning when UMA walked in a run, before the Owls set the Moose down in order in the home half of the 1st. The Owls had a huge 2nd inning, scoring four runs on five hits to take a 5-0 lead, but a nightmare bottom of the 2nd saw UMA rally back for six runs on some clutch two-out hitting. UMPI tied it back up at six the next half and eventually took a 7-6 lead in the 4th. UMA came through with another huge inning, scoring six more runs to take a 12-7 advantage – a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

UMA tacked on five more, capping it off with a walk-off run rule in the bottom of the 6th, for a 17-9 final score.

Top Performers:

Abby Doughty led the way with three hits for the Owls, who had 13 as a team. Zoe Stewart had two hits including a double, as well as Gracelyn Walsh and Madison Boynton. Boynton had a pair of RBI as well for UMPI. UMPI hit the ball plenty well enough to win the game, with 13 hits and just one strike out.

Game 2: 16-3 Owls

Thomas got busy early in the offensive category in this one, scoring five runs in the first three innings, while UMPI managed two in the top of the 3rd, keeping the game within reach for the Owls. A scoreless 4th gave way to the Terriers squeezing four more across in the 5th and 6th innings, while the Owls rallied for two in the 7th, but fell well short in the end. UMPI continued to hit the ball well, with 10 hits as a team in this one, but left seven runners aboard, and made five errors in the field, ultimately costing the Owls the chance at a doubleheader split.

Top Performers:

UMPI tore the cover off the ball in game two even more so in game one. The Owls got on the board in the early innings again, plating two in the 1st though UMA answered with one run in their half. The Owls scored two more in the second, and three in the 3rd thanks to a bases clearing double from Madison Boynton. The Owls kept the pressure on with three more in the 4th, to make it 10-3, though they were held scoreless in the 5th, putting the potential run-rule on pause for one more inning. Then in the 6th, UMPI came through with their biggest inning yet, scoring six runs to put it well out of reach, and shorten the game in their favor this time.

Top Performers:

The Owls combined for 22 hits as a team, but none were more impressive than Keira Greene who went 5-5 in the contest, with a double and an RBI, and three runs scored. Madison Boynton went 3-4 with a double and five runs batted in, Hailey Saylor went 3-5 with an RBI, Zoe Stewart went 3-4 with three runs scored, including her 100th career hit, a couple weeks after her counterpart Gracelyn Walsh reached it. Abby Doughty went 3-3 with four runs scored. Five Owls had three hits or more, with an additional two with two hits. Madison Boynton was dominant in the circle, tossing the complete game six innings, with three earned runs and five strikeouts.

Up Next:

The Owls pick up their 10th win of the season and are the second team on campus this year to reach double digits. It's their first 10 win seasons since this year's seniors were first-years back in 2023. The Owls have their third doubleheader of the trip as they head to UMF for two conference games slated for 2 and 4pm.
